SAR has a rumor that the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN will finally be announced. Lots of options to consider now that there is the Sony 70-200mm GM II, Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 G2, and now this lens. I personally prefer the Tamron because of it's size and weight.

Too little, too late.I've heard rumours about this lens a few years ago already.

Sigma should release sharp, contrasty and compact 70-200/4 DG DN Contemporary, weighing under 700g,no more than 15cm long, with 67 mm filter thread to complement 16-35/2.8+28-70/2.8 pair. This is something really needed by many.I guess more than another 70-180/200f2.8 zoom.

Remember, Sigma is part of the L Alliance.....so not everything is 100% driven solely by E mount. (although I surmise they sell more E mount lenses than L mount). So it may still make sense for Sigma to produce another L mount option to the Panny. And I don't think it's much effort to produce an E mount version. And I suspect it will be cheaper than the Sony (but will be at a disadvantage with no TC capabilities).

But I'd love to see that 70-200/4 with the specs you mention.

There’s an only one alternative to the 70-200mm f2.8 GM II and that is the Tamron, the 1st gen is pretty much obsolete at this point for new buyers. Working pros and enthusiasts who want/need a 70-200mm f2.8 but want OS and a lower price don’t actually have an option at the moment. Tamron’s G2 of the 70-180mm isn’t out yet so Sigma releasing one potentially in October makes a lot of sense.

I don’t see Tamron making a 70-180mm f4 and so far Sigma haven’t released any FF mirrorless zooms at that aperture either. Choice is to either get the new Sony 70-200mm f4 G II or wait for the upcoming f2.8s from Sigma and Tamron.

Guess we'll see if this time it will become a reality. Pretty late to the game but their main focus as you guys said is the l mount. I am extremely happy with my 70-200 gm ii. Waited long enough for the sigma version that never came. They would have to price it pretty well since it won't have TC compatability.

If this new lens is based off of the design of the Sigma 70-200 2.8 for Canon/Nikon/Sigma mounts that came out in 2018, then I could see the price in the range of $1500-2000 or so list is my guess. That older version of the lens is also an internally zooming lens which puts it (in theory) a step above the Tamron 70-180 2.8 G2 which does not have internal zoom.

It is nice to have more options for the E-Mount.

Perfectly said. I gave up on Sigma's delivery of this lens once the GMii was announced and have loved shooting with it for landscapes and sports since its release more than a year and a half ago.

Couldn't have shot this with the Sigma - since it (still) doesn't exist

I can't afford $3500 CDN so the GMII doesn't exist for me

If the Sigma has good performance and costs a lot less, it'll make my radar. Otherwise, I guess it's trolling the usual suspects for a good deal on a used GMII, but there does not appear to be any of those to be found, yet...

And Leica might want to rebrand it to match their 24-70/2.8.
