If we're talking film, Pentax 67 and 105 f/2.4.

If not, well... I'll see myself out.

If film - Pentax 67II + 75mm 2.8 AL. 105/2.4 would be close behind.

If we are talking digital and I could afford it (which I can't), it would be the Hassy X2D 100C and the XCD 55 f/2.5V.

No idea yet - where is the bag heading? I suppose that 1 body / 1 lens means 'portable'?

I'm schlepping this 50S-II with a 65mm Mitakon, and while it renders gentle, not over-the-top sharp, P67 105mm-like images, it is bloody heavy and I struggle to call this 1 body 1 lens 'portable'. I much rather carry my Z7 or M240 with a nice prime.

The lighter combo delivers different, not necessarily lower quality images. I therefore am not tempted to buy a lighter lens (like the 50mm 3.5) for the 50S-II. I am experimenting with FF lenses through an adapter though - but I digress!

For film, I'd get a Plaubel Makina, either the 67 or the 670; the 670 can take 220 film, which is no longer made, but the 670 has a few improvements over the 67. Not the most robust camera in the world, but the images are extraordinary, and its wonderful Nikkor lens is attached permanently, so that puts an automatic cap on gear acquisition syndrome. And with the bellows closed it's a pretty compact package.

I think the best bang for the buck today with no compromise IQ is the GFX 50SII with the GF 35-70. Even keeping the price consideration aside, it is hard to beat and a lot better than carrying a boatload of primes.

Wow. Almost a pocketable fixed lens collapsible 6x7cm format mechanical rangefinder camera. Super cool!

As there are no medium format digital sensor cameras, we are obviously talking about film.

This is my digital answer! Looks like an amazing combo.

+1 that 44x33 digital isn't really "medium format" ... but, I'd be interested to hear folks take on their 1 body / 1 lens for that, too (i.e. anything larger than 35mm format of 24x36), film, digital or otherwise.

This was Mamiya 7 + the legendary 43mm for many years. Would have kept going with that forever except scanning became problematic & burdensome.

It's funny how the 6x7 format shaped the way I saw things. Now that I'm in FF digital, I don't shoot so wide as often.

(I will confess to a certain temptation - if I could afford it - to a Hassy 907x with the new 28mm lens, and taking a totally different approach. That's a tiny setup, and you'd be very inconspicuous shooting with it, yet getting top of the line IQ...)

A pick of three:

Versatility (size and weight be damned): Hasselblad 2003 FCW + 60-120 mm zoom

Compact: GW690

Character: A pinhole camera

If the question was one camera, two lenses, then I'd say whatever Rolleiflex you can get your hands on.

Hasselblad 500 C/M with 4.0/50 T* lens. My most often used combo when shooting 6x6.

Ha, Ha ... that's still one lens for the optical path to the film plane.

I reckon one could make the case that many cameras have two lenses in them. One for the optical path to the capture media, one for the optical path to the eye (OVF, RF, EVF). (Even mirrorless EVF's have a diopter adjustment).

For compact and handheld MF film cameras, I have used these three for simple city walk-around outings: a Rolleiflex 3.5F, a Hasselblad SWC/903 (with a waste-level finder), and a, not so compact, Fujifilm GSW690 (6x9). For digital 44x33 sensor body, I would highly recommend a Hasselblad X1D with a 45P lens, not too expensive but with better IQs compared to any 35mm full-frame sensor cameras.

Thank you! I was hoping to hear input for digital MF kits too. I've seen/noticed a lot of your beautiful MF images posted on this forum 👍🏼
