Anyone have any experience with both of these lenses? Going to use it mostly for kid sports. Does the newer 70-200 have significantly faster AF? I’ve heard mixed reviews on the 70-200 IQ which has me concerned. I can get the 70-300 for a good bit cheaper. Pairing it with a a73.

I purchased the Sony 70-300mm when it was first released, some years ago. I was never very impressed with this lens and sold it within six months. The contrast and colors were not great. The sharpness was fair to good. Over the years, a number of photographers, on this forum, expressed similar findings. Having said that, I'm sure there a lot of photographers out there that are very happy with this lens.

From all I have read, and despite the fact that the new 70-200mm f4 II does not have the biting sharpness of the GM 70-200mm f2.8 II, it is still pretty darned sharp and focusing speed will be light-years better than the old 70-300mm. Contrast will also be much higher. Of course, there are other metrics such as coma, flare, CA's, LoCA's, etc. to consider, where I expect the newer lens to be better.

If you are dead-set on 70-300mm, the Tamron lens might be a consideration.

It depends on what sport we are talking about. You may want something longer for something like ruby

Assuming the focal length and zoom type lens is correct for the sport, 70-200GMii is the best lens for the job. The 70-200/4 ii would be second best because while it does have a great autofocus system, the GMii’s f/2.8 does assist in autofocus and AI tracking, and also pushes noise down by one stop
