I jumped on the R5 train as soon as it came out and have been regretting it every since as Canon continues to not release fast & wide L-quality primes, AND will not let Sigma or others make RF mounted lenses. I’ve been waiting years for Canon to make a RF 14mm f1.4/f1.8 like Sigma has in EF (or for Sigma to make a RF version). Even Sony has had a lightweight & fast 14 f/1.8 lens out for a couple of years now. I’m done waiting on Canon. I’ve had the cash set aside for a second body and at least two nice fast & wide lens for a northern lights trip this winter. Ready to move on from Canon, they can only string us along for so long. Anyone made a similar leap? I’ve pretty much decided to pick up a Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM lens, and then work backwards from there on a second body. Any suggestions?

Nope, I'm struggling with too many lens choices for the RF system. Running out of room in my lens cupboard.

I feel your pain, but I left Sony because of the lack of small, compact, wide angle primes. In my particular case I needed small primes to go with my Sony A7c for travel. Attaching a large 14mm GM prime would have dawrfed my A7c and defeated the entire purpose of having a compact, full frame camera like the A7c.

My suggestion if you have the mobey is to buy a Sony with that 14mm prime you like, but keep your Canon system. I'm almost certain Canon will be releasing new L primes in the near future.

kind of funny you posted this. I was a longtime Canon shooter, up until the 5dmkIII. I switched to Sony mirrorless for the wide selection of lenses, but in the back of my mind have kind of been wanting to switch back to Canon. BUT, the lack of wide angle L glass, as well as the slow development/release of products in general has been holding me back from switching. a R5 mkII, with a 14/24/35/85/135L prime setup would be ideal, but so far only 2 of those items exist. I'll keep checking back in in the years to come, but Sony continues to put out amazing glass so might be too deep in the Sony ecosystem by that time.

They keep coming. Viltrox AF 16 f1.8 is the latest. Check some reviews....

Haha, we are a fickle bunch indeed. Too fast, too slow, too long, too short...I'll take one of each please.

Aren’t both of these threads saying the same thing (not enough fast lenses)?

I feel your pain, as I’d really love a 35 RF 1.4 (though you are probably thinking wider), but apparently we should see a few wide L primes between now and March. I don’t love Canon’s handling of the RF releases, particularly the way they’ve limited 3rd party options, but hopefully things will improve soon. Good luck, either way.

I'm a dual system user so I already got into the Sony mirrorless system with their NEX series. Now I have the A6700 and some Sony aps-c and ff lenses. I use it whenever I want to carry something smaller and lighter. Otherwise I really love the R6MKII and my EF lenses.

Not me - re need RF for aurora - the aurora is on the tripod and the Zeiss 15/2.8 or EF laowa 12 2.8 or EFtamron 15-30 or samgang 14 2.8 are all pretty good adapted.

And the drop in filter with TS17 and TS24 makes landscape with ND so easy - I don't need to bring a box of filters.

I think the only people impatient are those using 14mm handheld - pretty rare? At 14mm, shift is critical but having an RF mount is marginally different.

I used to be tempted by the lighweight Sony lens - now thats gone because weight matters but for landscape and wildlife (maybe not bif) adapted are seamless.

Just adapt the EF version.

The downside: you can't go with one body as soon as you need both lenses from the RF system and the FE system. A second body kills the weight advantage of the GM lens. If you always go with two bodies anyway it's not a downside of course.

Surprised to see the Sony 16-35/4 has 8-9% distortion at 16mm. Sony doesn't seem to be the solution for uwa.

Sounds like par for the course now if you happen to use most of such lenses uncorrected? Canon 16/2.8 is as bad.

I guess Viltrox 16/1.8 is the lens to get now. It's fully hardware corrected, for a change.

Assuming this is a serious question, it seems like it would most productively be posted in the Sony forum.

The Canon is a lot lighter though. Not even close

But the inexpensive 24-105 stm is starting to look like an optical purity lens since it's 6.2% distorion at the 24mm end (actually close to none at the long end) What's the point complaining about Canon computational imaging like I've been doing if Sony is doing it too? 20-70 & 16-35/4 have very high distortion in the 8-9% range almost as bad as rf 16. Even opticallimits said the other brands doing more at least several years ago.

I'd be pretty hesitant to go Sony based on the uwa distortion.

The Sigma 14-24/2.8 and Sony 12-24/2.8 GM are fairly modest wrt to distortion, I have the former and it's a phenomenal lens. You'll find the lenses where the goal is compactness often have more distortion than some of the larger lenses. So sometimes it's a pick your poison type scenario. (But there are so many options in E mount you really can pick your poison.)

Keep your powder dry a little longer. I think Canon is close to opening up the RF mount in the next six months based on what I have read from numerous sources. The video below is the latest from a guy who seems to have a good source regarding Canon. He has been quite accurate in the past regarding Canon's future actions.

We all have our pet lens "needs" despite many dozens of lenses out there. Canon can't please everybody, especially a tiny niche, but they manage to cover the most popular ranges first, often at multiple price points. I don't want or need a fast and wide lens wide optic. Heck F2 or 2.8 is good enough since it mainly gets used at F5.6 to F8. My cry in the dark was for a pancake and, indeed, Canon finally coughed one up, the RF 2.8 2.8 STM. I own several EF/EF-S pancakes but, with adapter, they be pancakes no more.

While you wait for the many fabled fast RF wide of the not too distant future, you can suffer with an excellent EF 35 1.4L II or Sigma 35 1.4. Both are huge so the RF adapter won't add much to an already massive optic. I suspect the RF variant rumored to be on the horizon will be even bigger (and more expensive).
