With the common loons, I'm in one of two different canoes which are "sit on bottom" canoes that I paddle with a double-blade paddle like a kayak. I would like to be able to get the camera lower yet but it is the best I can do.

The Red-throated loons are a unique situation and were surprisingly tolerant, but still required slow/low approach. I was sitting on the edge of ponds after walking/crawling through marshy surrounds. One body/lens was on a tripod that was set into the water. The other body/lens was hand held for flight shot opportunities. My feet were hanging over the edge into the water. Sometimes I was lying in my belly but that is a hard position for me to maintain. Multiple ponds gave different kinds of opportunities. They were all fairly small ponds - nothing like the larger water bodies that common loons require (takeoff distance).

Bruce these are over the top good. I have never seen the Red-throated before, lovely. Beautiful light and low perspective. Boy you sure got nice and close with these guys.

Much Appreciated Dave. I've seen stellata in winter plumage along the US eastern seaboard, but never in breeding plumage. This was quite the treat for me.

Were you in a kayak for these or a floating blind? It would be helpful too to number the images for easier C/C

"Sit on bottom" canoe for common loons, Sitting in marsh grass at edge of pond with muck boots and tripod in the water, and a second body/lens for flight in hand for the Red-throateds. Low as I could get. Yes, I should have numbered them.
