This is a handy little lens. I'm surprised it doesn't get more love. MFD at 70mm is a few inches it seems, and it has a nice glow like the 58 1.4g. The B&W wasp is at 70mm, mfd f4.5, DX crop.

I’m very interested in this lens as it is a relative low-cost option for the range. I’m very interested in how it works with TC’s. My lens in this range is a 100-400, which is outstanding. A few drawbacks for me are its weight and F5.6 at the longer end. My “wish-lens” would be a 100-300/4

Would love for Sigma or Nikon make their 120-300/f2.8 in f4 and for the z mount!

I am buying one to be my fourth lens. I tried it out on Saturday and shot it in absolutely horrible conditions to expose warts. I photographed bright car chrome with backlight and highlights, I photographed black signs with white lettering and white signs with black lettering, I photographed people with harsh sun on their faces in a distance, and the lens did not flare or give up any detail. I generally shoot I overcast light and on snowy and rainy days, and these conditions are far easier on optics. Finally, I was impressed by its weight, the small zoom throw, a the fact that extends very little during the zooming.
Because it is is so compact, I can fit the following into my TT Backlight 36L : Z9, Z8, 800PF, 400 f4.5, 70-180, and 17-28.... Just perfect!

Went out today to try the 70-180 w/ Z-TC14 on the Z8. The light was very heavy overcast. and I was careless with my ISO setting. I inadvertently set my camera to bias high ISO's (ie bird in flight settings) rather than my slow mammal work. As a result, most of the photos were taken at ISO 5000 or higher
Because of the high ISO and thick overcast lighting, some details were lost.
Overall, I think that this is a viable combination, but the 1.4x has a greater negative impact on image quality with the 70-180 when compared to when it is on the 400 f/4.5... no surprise there!

cheers,
bruce

Bruce,

Yes, it appears that the image quality does suffer a bit from the high ISO and the TC 1.4. Bare, I expect the lens will be much sharper.

But with the Nikon version at least you have the opportunity to choose your compromises. Sony won't allow third party lenses to use TCs. I wasn't pleased by this when I had my copy.

I suspect that the shortcomings are due mostly to the shooting conditions and my carelessness with respect to the camera settings. While there is no doubt that the teleconverter will negatively impact image quality, the heavy foreground shadow of deer below the forest canopy juxtaposed to the brightly lit grasslands in the rear resulted in a very challenging situation. The AF was quite spotty for the Z8, as it tended to grab the contrasty grasses rather than the prominent deer. These three were the best of the bunch.. not much to celebrate, but at least they demonstrate that the converter will function with the 70-180.

There are very few lenses where I have found the 1.4x converter to be benign... the 400 f/4.5 was one as was the Z 70-200 f2.8S. Were it not for the fact that I want to be able to carry the Z9, Z8, 17-28, 400 f4.5, and 800PF in one airline permissible bag, I'd have stuck with either the 70-200S or 100-400S. The latter two lenses take up too much space, and they have been my least frequently used optics. The NikonRon 70-180 f2.8 seems to be a good compromise, and it is small enough that it can be packed with the rest of my nature kit in one backpack. Unfortunately, I can't squeeze this stuff in my F-stop Tilopa (my preferred camera pack), so I am making due with the ThinkTank Backlight 36L

cheers,
bruce

Two shots while driving. The first isn't really a good example of the sharpness of the lens as it was shot through my tinted windows and pretty heavily cropped but it is a good example of the usefulness of its portability. I thought it was a funny shot, I wouldn't have got it with a heavy 70-200 one handed while rolling by. Second shot is pretty sharp and has nice symmetry for a driveby, he certainly looks into what he's browsing through

This is why I bought the 70-180...
So far it seems to be a good landscape lens.

The 1st PA Artillery having some fun. They were competing in the Fall Nationals of the NSS-A at Ft Shenandoah, Winchester VA. The date was Oct.7, 2023. This shot was from a preburst capture from my Z8. At the next nationals, I will set the preburst rate to 120fps instead of 30. Maybe then I will picture stop the cannon ball in flight.

Seems like a potential succesor to the AF-S 70-200 f4.
Slightly lighter, a stop faster, slightly shorter at the long end. All good trade offs to my mind.

Looking forward to getting my copy tomorrow. I was plenty happy with my 24-120 f4S but wanted something with a bit more flexibility at the long end (along with a 1.4xtc). Guess I'll find out soon enough how it stacks up. Also for portrait use as well.

I just took delivery of my copy of the 70-180 f2.8 late today. My initial results were all indoors and not even in great light. And wide open this thing is surgically sharp which kind of surprised me (in a good way). Focus is instant on moving subjects I tried (my wife and our 2 house bunnies). I'll head outside to give that a try tomorrow. Will post if I get anything worthwhile.

This guy caught me with a cup of coffee in one hand, and my camera in the other. Thankfully the 70-180mm is lightweight.

The size and weight of this lens js very attractive. I am considering getting one to replace the big 70-200FL or the 24-200Z. How does it compare in the real world?

I bet you've read this:
https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-z-70-180mm-f-2-8/3
and this:
https://www.zsystemuser.com/z-mount-lenses/nikkor-lenses/nikon-z-mount-lens-reviews/nikon-70-180mm-f28-lens.html

I am not sure what "real world" is.
For portraiture, even rendition across the frame is not that important. For landscapes/cityscapes things are different. Therefore, it really depends on what you use a 70-200 for.
I understand, from reviews I've read, that the lens is not as a good performer as your 70-200FL or the Z 70-200/2.8. It should be better than the 24-200Z; not a much surprising finding ...
If I had a 70-200FL, I would not swap it for the Tamrikon 70-180.
