p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Soccer photos

Been a way for a bit but will be back out shooting some games this weekend and had a few from my last couple outings I wanted to share and get some feedback on. Been upping the shutter speed lately to a min of 1/2500 (in the past I tried to stay with 1/1250 or 1/1600) but the 1/2500 seems to give a little help lately. Starting to feel more comfortable with the Canon R3 the past six months and look forward to having it all fall this year. Mainly shooting the R3 paired with the Canon EF 400mm F2.8L IS II USM.

I've had some trouble uploading photos in the past, so I did saves from the main photo to my desktop - I'm hoping it doesn't lower the quality too much to few, but I'm assuming it will as it is the original photo (high res) but a save from my site to a my desktop photo (low res).

Wow! These are all really excellent. I especially love #1. Easily could have been cropped in portrait orientation, but I like it in landscape (as a portrait orientation, I think you would have had to go 1x1 or 4x5 to get it in).

Creamy, smooth skin - did you use a particular software for PP?

Have to admit that #2 doesn't do much for me - I assume she is jumping to warm up before the game or half started?

#3 captures great expressions on the teammates!

That 400 f2.8 is great! May have to save up for one....

In general this is good work. Couple of comments:

I'm on a 27" monitor and still have to scroll to see all of a photo. You might want to post smaller versions so scrolling is not required.

#1 IMO best of the lot
#2 hmm..... ok cool position but not really a good action shot.
#3 nice jube! white balance is off a bit, green tint on faces
#4 appears over exposed IMO
#6 Like it!
#7 how much was done in PP? Appears a tad too smooth?

@crteach - as for PP, basically straight out of the camera with two things done in PP - some crop and then in Luminar Neo, I used noiseless. For a long time I was spending time in PP trying to be different and was working on more of a dramatic look and then one day I had a photo that was just off (like 98% sharp, with just enough to upset me it seemed off) and I tried the noiseless feature in PP and there was a low, medium and high. I did low and noticed it improved that photo just enough to make it good. So since, I have been using that on more and more photos and it just ups it enough that I don't have to do much - it also improved the red just enough.

So that is all that was down to all the photos in PP - except the night photo.

@schlotz - The night photo was taken from at least 80 yards away at night on a somewhat poorly lit fields. The game was tied and I thought it was going to to a shoot-out and it would be on my side of the field. So I moved to that side and with about 40 seconds left - the team stole the ball and the forward made a long run and hit a beautiful shot with about 8 seconds left to win the game and that was the celebration. I was so far away, but got the photo and had to do some work to get it to at least look bright, but I'm not great at PP so on an iphone it looked better, but on a larger screen I can totally see the issues.

Also, I noticed the issue with the scrolling as well, i'll adjust that for future.

As for the #2 shoot - not great, but that is more of a joke with me and that player. She's been doing that since she was little and I have never been able to capture it with the ball and at her highest - but for a site like this that i'm looking for feedback, that was probably a poor shot to show.

As for the #4, I was shooting on a highly bright day (almost too bright) and then on that side of the field it was also shadow from trees, so I left the ISO constant but it also gave me really over exposed shots in that part of the field.

#7 is the same deal as PP I explained above - straight out of the camera with just a noiseless used in PP and it adjusted it slightly. That player was also, right next to me with a 400mm. No crop on that photo - not sure if that helped or not.

Re: #7 - Right next to you with the 400mm could explain it. The DoF that close in is very shallow.

RE: #4 - autoISO can be your friend, don't be afraid to use it.

You shoot with the same set up I use and to my eye your work is excellent. Each image tells a story and makes the viewer look at it longer. The 400 2,8 makes the background sing in all or your images with no distractions. I like to shoot girls soccer but found that they do not like some of my best images because of how they look not the great action they have provided. Bruce

Very typical, generally they have a different value stream in regards to photos of them in action. There are however some that cherish their peak action captures, regardless.
