Flash Acting Odd?

Seems like late last year I used the flash at 1/4 power, had no trouble shooting 3 in a second or so, hesitated and got a couple more.

Now , I fire 1-2 and it has to recharge, for seconds, like at full power. I use 1/16 so it's faster and it seems brighter than I got at 1/4, before.

Any idea? Older 540ez, both are similar, thought it might be old batteries, one cell might be a weak, but new seem similar. Chart on mir.com seems to say I should get more than 3 at 3 per second at 1/4 .

I have some older eneloops one may have gone bad, not sure had a thread about it. I got 2300mah energizer like I used before and liked. Full recharge <4sec, <5sec for older eneloops.

Pretty sure I used the last set of 2300mah energizers on one of these flashes

It's probably normal and your expectations are different. 1/4 was a fair amount to maintain back then.
We used external packs to decrease the recycle times.

No, I already considered that, possible but I had to remember the f stop & iso on the M flash, so I'm skeptical I goofed up the power. If you look at the chart it says 6 exposures 3Hz, 3fps, I got a little less IIRC but still ~5 frames pretty quick isn't bad. Seems like I got ~15 at 5 fps 1/16 power on 40d, chart says 20, .
