So, I picked up a maxed out (24GB / 2TB) MBA 15 to try it out to see how well it would do, since I really like the 15 inch size.
My "heavy" stuff is when I do photo stitching in PS.
So, I ran an 18 image (40MP's) stitch, with content aware fill and it took about 3:30 minutes (210 seconds) on the MBA.
Same thing on the MBP (64GB / 2TB) took 2:30 (150 seconds). Memory pressure was around 40GB on the MBP (didn't check on the MBA). Both run on full battery (not plugged in). I didn't bother to re-run on mains.
Depending on which way you do the math, that's either 30% quicker for the MBP or 40% longer for the MBA.
150/210 = .7
210/150 = 1.4
Nothing too surprising, here ... aligns with the benchmarks, etc. that exist. Just one of my "real world" uses. Thought I'd share.
I'll be taking the MBA back, and keeping the MBP (M2). It's not that I do that much stitching, but the overall experience on the MBP seems just a bit smoother, and a bit crisper. Tossing around a 35,000px wide file, zooming in/out at Fit, 100% and 300% (stitching error inspection), will separate the diff's in the MBA without ProMotion and the MBP with ProMotion.
The size difference is nominal between the 16 vs. 15 (unlike the 16 vs. 14 or 14 vs. 15) for laptop viewing.
The weight is noticeably different when handling one vs. the other. But, when it's on my lap ... once I get settled in to my workflow, the slightly larger footprint distributes the additional weight well, and I don't really notice the diff. It's mostly noticeable, just when I switch back / forth between the two.
In my case, the TB port on the right hand side is preferable, where the MBA is left side only. SD card slot is also welcome, but I can tether (right hand side) to an external HD with dock / slot with the MBA. Minor things, that may not mean something to others. But, when you have minor things ... and multiply them by 365 for the next several years ... might as well, kick 'em to the curb. .
MBA goes back, as I write this post with it ... but, it is a nice, light 15 inch rig.
