But what the application would be for that one?

I assume there is no variable shutter on the A7Cr. So the solution to LED lights with this camera is to use EFCS semi-mechanical shutter and to keep your shutter speed modest under that type of lighting.

Is anything about the above incorrect?

I’ll need to toy with a a6700 to see just how small that EVF feels. It looks to be nearly identical to the original A7 in both res and magnification.

Both are video oriented cameras which isn’t surprising. What I am bit surprised about is the LCD, EVF and no additional buttons/ergo improvement on the a7cR vs the a7c2. I was hoping for a tilt rear screen, a better (not great) EVF and one or two more physical buttons. That high MP is a real thing though, and the better IBIS and front wheel are nice. It is nearly identical. The only visible difference between it and my rII's EVF is I have that one set to mono. That said, it's not terrible. Just disappointing.

As usual, except for the Q2 thing, I like the way you're thinking. I could pick up a used a7c, where the small grip makes it perfect for the wide angle bellows on the Actus, the couple of parts I need to rebuild the Actus, lens plates, including an F-mount plate because, now that I know I have additional IC to use on the Milvus 18 and APO-Sonnar 135, I plan to use it. That would get me back to happy with the ponderous landscape camera. And then an R camera for everything else the 50sII does, like time lapses and ponderous scapes in places where the Actus isn't welcome.

Assuming my GFX sale goes through on Friday, I think this is my plan. Then it comes down to deciding on the R model. The rIII has a sensor I know and love in a body I know and love with an EVF that's equal to what I have with the GFX. Plus it would leave me with money left over. Or I could spend it all and go with the rIV which has a couple million more dots on the EVF. Decisions, decisions.

I hope these new cameras, especially R, will force lens makers to produce more quality compact lenses. Today, many small lenses are not as good optically as, say, tiny G trio and their flaws will be exaggerated by bigger sensors.

While a hair slower at f/2 I think Sigma has done a nice job with their I-Series DC DN Contemporary lens family with aperture ring and all metal design. That approach makes them heavier but optically the are very nice on my current A7C and will work great on the A7C II. Have to try them on my A7RV to evaluate how they would work on the A7CR. Others here may know the answer to that question.

I'm just tired of having to make compromises. Put everything you got in an A7C body. Stop artificially handicapping a camera to not step on another's toes. That is what they continue to do. That is what they did here again. Gimp on EVF, rear LCD, sensor read speeds, list goes on and on etc.... Sony could put the best of everything they have in an A7c body and it would be incredible. It would also still be waaaay cheaper than what people pay for Lecia bodies. It would cost no more R&D because they have all the components. Just do it and charge more. That's what they did at the time with RX1Rii (that was the ultimate look what we can do in a small package camera) and that camera still has a cult following today. It would be one thing if I thought they couldn't do it. But that is not the case. They are choosing not to do it, and I'm annoyed Yup! it's all about me and what I want Ok. I feel better. Thanks

I keep going back and forth on whether I should return it and buy the A7CII...! In addition to the above, it seems like the grip of the A7CII is noticeable larger as well. Carrying the A7C with one hand and a wrist strap is not super comfortable... and the new one might improve with the larger grip. That's one of the few things I am not loving from the A7CII.

Purely subjective with the grip. I tried the 28-200 on my A6400 a few times and it was ok, not great. I like the feel, etc., with the 18-135 a lot better. I hooked up the 28-200 on the a6700 the other day and that was better. So not sure how close the A6700 grip is to the A7Cii and A7CR but it was an improvement for me.

Yeh, but right when you start to shrink down the A1 to A7c size, all of a sudden buttons disappear, screens get smaller, viewfinder is on the left edge etc... Let's not forget the requirement for the heat handling for shooting burst of 30 fps.

I think there is a definite different use case for the A1 cameras and the A7c(r) cameras.

Nah...you'll only be happy until Nikon or Canon come out with a feature your wizbang all-in-one camera does not have and the process of why can't Sony have that will start all over.

Sony is very committed to having its core user base invest in multiple cameras. They also want us to upgrade often. They almost always add new features to each new release, and sometimes (often?) leapfrog features of more expensive cameras.

It’s hard to know what to buy exactly. It’s one reason I haven’t upgraded since the a7r3. Sony doesn’t make it easy. Probably most bang for buck right now is the a7r5 at around 3100-3300 US. But it’s very compelling to have a lot of that feature set (but definitely not all) in a smaller format.

The main goal for me right now is to want to use my gear and camera. To want to carry it and try to get shots I couldn’t get with an iPhone. Anything that encourages me to do that should be paramount.

Everyone has different criteria for what they want and sometimes it’s different than what they really need. Sony forces us to figure that out by having to choose among so many different cameras.

I think they'd be a bit too heavy on the A7C II & R. I've been running around with the 65 F/2 on my A7R V and it's just ever so slightly front heavy. It's also a little long too. Lovely optics though. The 65 F/2 is absurdly sharp.

Not sure if this was already mentioned but the A7C II camera's mechanical shutter closing speed remains unchanged from its predecessor at 1/4000s. On the other hand, the A7CR has a faster mechanical shutter at 1/8000s.

Both cameras have an electronic shutter speed of 1/8000s. Importantly, neither of them features a full mechanical shutter.

It’s good advice. I updated my last post because I was rushed in finishing it, and I updated it in a way that addresses your suggestion. I think what makes being a user of the Sony ecosystem challenging is the features are so spread across different models. It’s also not always easy to figure out what you want and that’s not always the same as what you need. When I was younger I had more time to be flexible and experiment. This season of life makes my choices have more weight. We’re spoiled for choice and Sony makes some great cameras. But you definitely cannot have it all in one camera.

The Sigma 65/2 DC DN is a lens I own and have used it on my A7C. It is the largest/longest of the series I think. But you can also look at the new Viltrox f/1.2 75mm and 27mm for APS-C and that are even heavier (own the 75/1.2 for my A6700).
I guess after using so many big GM lenses those don’t phase me much.

Was just thinking....add the new 16-35 f/4 PZ to the A7cR, and you've got quite a powerful & compact landscape/travel combo if you can survive with f/4 speed. Or the Tamron 20-40 2.8.

I originally said the new 16-35 2.8II would be a good match, and while I'm sure it is from a performance standpoint, seeing it in a review attached to the A7cR makes me think it's too big to take advantage of the A7cR's size, even though it is indeed smaller than the 1st version.

I own the V1 version of the 16-35/2.8 GM and use it on the A7RV but looking forward to the V2 16-35/2.8 since my son has “borrowed” my V1.Also have the PZ 16-35/4 to try and it is very small and probably the best size for the A7C but the Sigma 16-28/2.8 is also very good and relative light and small.take a look.
