Hello all.
I have an old 24-70 2.8 mk1 that I dropped while mounted on 5d.
It seems that the bayonet disassembled and cannot screw back on.

Which repair shops do you think would be able to fix it for a reasonable price?

It seems like many shops doesn’t have the parts or don’t repair old lens.

Do you think it’s worth fixing it? or purchase a used one?
i’m located in NJ, close to NYC.
thx.

john

I dropped mine like 10 years ago and cost $750 to fix by Canon. I think it is better off to get another one.

My experience is that if you can find a mechanic it will be very expensive. Also, I couldn't get Canon to say it would fix it. 'Unavailable' or something like that. I'm not moving to RF (seriously I get excellent images with the 'out of date old rigs), so repair/renew is a major question.

It's still a pretty expensive lens, ~$700-800 or so from keh, I definitely think you should call around, if you haven't already, and get quotes, or maybe send it in and get a quote, assuming it's a free quote.

Used to be one that looked good in Rhode Island, probably some in the greater NYC area, might call b&h or something and see who they recommend.

Try for a quote, but as someone who loves his EF24-70mm f2.8L, even I would think there are better options like the EF v2. There are also some excellent third party lenses in the 24-70mm range for quite reasonable prices used.

Is the actual silver mount damaged? Or something further in the lens? IIRC the mounts are replaceable.

Check with Midwest Camera Repair in Wyandotte Michigan, they repaired my 28-70 f2.8L several years ago, it's still works very, very well. They were not fast but I swear the lens came back sharper than before I dropped it.

The economic side is a different issue, it will cost several hundred for the repair. Until you get an actual quote you can't really make a final decision on which direction you want to go.

If you decide not to get it repaired see if they want to buy the lens as is since that is how they acquire their repair parts. Canon does not sell parts to other repair shops.

Sell for parts and put the money towards the optically better (plus IS) model II.

The 2.8 II does not have IS only the f4 version does

I agree with the v2 being better and good 3rd party options. If it isn't very expensive it's probably good to fix it though. A mount issue might be a reasonable repair depending on the actual issue, yes that might be repairable

They (Midwest) did a great job with mine (broken ribbon cable and burned-up aperture motor) recently. It was a 2 week turn-around, lens came back fully cleaned and works like a champ again. In your case, getting one thing fixed with an old lens is a roll of the dice, as the ribbon cables are a weak spot in these, so you might have a time bomb on your hands. You might consider upgrade options, and use the sale of the lens for parts; just my thoughts...

When I started having issues with my v1 some years ago, I considered repair, but in the end it was a no-brainer to move to the v2 for the better optical quality. I never regretted that move.

thank you all for your replies.
I'll call around to see the prices, and if not, maybe it's time for an upgrade.
