In general, for landscapes, which do you prefer? And why?

* Notice there is no option for "it depends". I'm asking about a very generalized overall preference.

* I don't mean those extreme highly saturated sepia conversions. I'm referring to a very "restrained" toning effect where you might not even notice it if wasn't side-by-side with its grayscale counterpart.

I know you don’t want to hear depends…but it really does depend on the mood one is trying to achieve. I like to add sepia or other toning to images where I want to portray a dark moody feeling. A bright image I like to leave out all toning.

Think of it this way - If you could only choose one for your entire non-color catalog, which would it be?

I'm with Chez. Despite your constraint, I'm still "it depends" and for me is a per-image decision.

Why are you trying to force respondents to make one choice or the other?

I use regular B&W more, I suppose, but it depends on the image.

Geez, I'm not asking you to choose a spouse, just putting out a simple "which do you prefer" poll. I didn't even state that it should be about your own images. It could just as easily apply to a gallery wall. As originally stated, "I'm asking about a very generalized overall preference."

If I had to do ALL my images in bw vs. toned ... bw.

Then I'd set the ones I want toned by the window.

Maybe tell us what you are trying to get out of this poll. When people tell you it depends on the image, that should tell you something.

Actually, in your earlier response you said, "Think of it this way - If you could only choose one for your entire non-color catalog, which would it be?"

Which to me says that you're asking for a single choice, not a "usually", or "often" or anything that might indicate that we don't always want to do the same thing.

Well, if one of the poll choices was "it depends", guess what would would get 100% of the votes. This isn't complicated at all, just curious which is preferred.

Actually, in my original post I said "I'm asking about a very generalized overall preference." What you're quoting out of context is a reply to another member.

I like my monochrome images a little warm- usually.
But there are too many shades and strengths of "sepia" to make any useable statement.
I do not use the actual brown sepia- ever.

Then you got your answer…it depends. I’m not trying to be a smart ass, but for me I don’t have an absolute preference and really approach toning colour and amount a print at a time. I’d say roughly 60% of my b&w prints are toned, but not all toned prints are sepia and not all toned prints are of the same amount. So to give you a b&w ( pun intended ) answer, I can’t as there are many factors that come into play. Even the type of paper, matte and frame affect the toning I apply to the print.

I loathe the classic tan/brown sepia. I would never treat a single photo with it.

I don't like sepia tones of any intensity. If you are depriving the eyes of color, then grays should be as neutral as possible.

Apologies. My mistake.
