I was shooting in Soho, NYC, last week and saw this fellow riding on a skateboard approaching me on the sidewalk. I lifted my camera and took his photo as he passed. Realizing I was a street photographer, he circled around, introduced himself, and started a conversation with me. He was lively and outgoing and said that he was a street photographer too, specializing in taking short videos and stills of agreeable people that he approached on the street. He pulled out his camera and showed me some sample images. He explained that he posted his videos and stills on Instagram.
When he mentioned Instagram, I complained that after a year of posting on IG, I had gotten frustrated as I had only acquired 250 followers. David commented that people in today's world want to see videos and that is the key to acquiring followers. Instagram gladly obliges and their algorithm favors videos over still photographs. He gave me his IG handle, @dgphotoholic, and I said I would check it out. With that he skated off down the street.
So later in the day, I checked out his IG account. What he didn't tell me is that he has 1.2 million followers. Not that I'm changing what I do, but the photography world has definitely changed.
