p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · I may be ready to move to MILC. Advice, please.

For several years I have been shooting mostly Canon EF 35mm film bodies. I have sold off all but my favorite, the Elan 7S. I also have a 90D, which I plan to keep. My upgrade to MILC will replace the obviously aging 6DII. I have settled on the EOS R6, and control ring adapter, as my first MILC.

A few questions remain. My flash gear is: 3x 580EXII, 90EX which I use as a master to control 580EXIIs, and an MR-14EX (not II). Will all of my flash gear work on the R6? I am aware the red flash assist will not work on MILC.

I understand all of my Canon EF lenses will work just fine with my chosen control-ring EF-EOS R adapter. How about my Sigma lenses? I have 24-70mm f/2.8 OS ART, 70-200mm f/2.8 OS SPORT, and 150-600mm CONTEMPORARY. I have seen some reports of focus 'stutter' with the 150-600. Will my Sigma lenses function as intended on the R6?

I do not intend to buy and RF-mount lenses, initially. If I pick up one later, it will most likely be 24-105mm version.

Mods, I was previously on FM as: bassat. I could not sign in because I could not set/reset my password, an email problem apparently. When I tried to use that name when re-registering, I was informed that the name was already in use. Not sure what happened.

I suggest renting a camera for a weekend to test out compatibility, especially of all those 3rd party lenses.
The R6 II is not much more than the R6 but worth it especially if you don't upgrade often.

Agree with EBH. There is a learning curve with MILC’s which shouldn’t be minimized. Also, I’m not really sure that I would move to the format without considering taking advantage of the lenses. Although they are very pricey, they tend to be smaller, lighter, often times with better IS/AF, etc. It’s not that the EF lenses won’t work with the adapter, they do, but some of the old ones don’t allow faster FPS or full AF areas. As EBH said, particularly for the 3rd party stuff, it would be wise to rent/borrow a MILC and see how it performs.

My EF and Sigma lenses, (2001 70-200 2.8 EX and 150-600 C), work fine on my R6. The 150-600 will show AF pulsing but only when the subject is close and the background confusing. I have no plans to replace these lenses with RF units until they fail. I would go for a R6 mark II, but my R6 does everything I need. There is a short learning curve but both of the R6s are excellent cameras.

I went from the 6dmk2 to an R6. Major improvement not only in features and functions, but in image IQ as well. I kept most of my EF lenses; they work perfectly well with the inexpensive Canon EF/RF adapter (no function ring).

The AF tracking on the R6 is like magic! It sticks to the subject like no other previous camera I have ever owned!

As for RF lenses, I didn't like the RF 24-105mm f4L. It had AF issues and wasn't sharp at all. I purchased the inexpensive RF 16mm, 28mm, 35mm and 50mm. They are super sharp and don't cost a fortune.

I shoot a 1DsIII and 1D IV and I tested the R3 with the Control Ring adapter and none of my L lenses (135L, 70-200L IS, 400L 5.6) or my Sigma 60-600 were as fast as on their native body.

When I go to the R1 it will be with R glass for shooting BIF.

If speed is the need, forget adapters and extenders.

Mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. I prefer the broader MILS, with system represented by the last letter, so as to include the lenses and accessories.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I guess I should have included that I mostly shoot my dogs in the yard, or park, and family functions. I also do some hand-held macro (EF 100L), and a bit of product shooting for E-Bay. The 6D w/6FPS is a bit slow when doing some things. The 90D w/10FPS is quite adequate. The R6 can do 20FPS; that should do me just fine.

Part of what motivates the move is shooting birds in the yard w/150-600mm. I have repeatedly shot Redwing Blackbirds in the bushes/trees around the yard (before foliage grows), on bare branches. Even w/SPOT focus AI-Servo on the 90D, I get shots focused on a fore/back-ground branch. My best outing so far is less than 5% in focus. I believe the R6 is capable of better.

I do like the idea of renting first to see what I think before committing. I checked the local camera store. The newest Canon rental equipment is 5DIII, and 7DII. Not quite what I need.

Years ago people tried to create an acronym for mirrorless and danced around in circles. Nothing stuck and everybody just uses mirrorless now.

But, yeah, I'd spring for the R6 MK II if doable. The improvements in AF, video, thermal control and hot shoe are worth the extra cost. I just saw R6 MK II refurbs available at Canon Direct as of yesterday (8/26). Probably go fast.

Mirror-less shooters have told me that "in cover there is not much difference" from the mirrored bodies.

I also suggest you rent.

I take the advantages of R62 as: faster (40fps) burst rate, slightly improved AF, 24mp vs 20mp, and a more videos features. I don't really need any of that. I've shot less than an hour of video since I got my 5D2 way back when. The R62 is $2200 vs R6 $1800, both refurbed. $400 difference would cover my EF-R adapter, and all the shipping and taxes. Am I missing something big on the R62? Oh, and I don't get the 'hot shoe' difference. All I need is for it to work with my existing EX/EXII units.

I checked BorrowLenses. R6 is $127 for 7 days, R6II is $129 for 7 days.

The hot shoe difference is the R6 isn't a great design: retaining screws tend to easily work loose, resulting in the shoe falling off, usually right after the warranty expires. Unlike EOS of yesteryear, the screws must be tightened from the inside, requiring removal of most of the body shell for repair. However, the new hot shoe is more than merely more solidly attached. It is called a multi-function shoe because it has additional contacts to pass power and digital data for Canon's new Speedlites accessories such as GPS, radio triggers, mics, audio interface, etc.

I seem to recall the R6 being on fire sale a couple months back for $1299 new (not refurbished) and jumped up to $1599 a few months later. Maybe stock is running low and they jacked up the price.

I just watched a video describing the increased 'customizability' of the AF on the R6II. Interesting. Upgraded AF is basically what I am upgrading for. I may have to reconsider the R6II. Alas, in my position, cost matters.

They newer camera will probably have a couple of years more serviceable lifetime if that matters.

Yes, cost over time matters, too. My next camera will likely be my last camera. More food for thought.

You might also consider the R8: same sensor, hot shoe and AF of the R6 MK II but in a smaller camera body for $1500. You lose the bigger battery, some weather sealing, some physical controls, IBIS, ability to use a battery grip and the better thermal design of the R6 MK II. Since video isn't your thing, the overheating during 4K won't matter.

Regarding video, I was much like you with my DSLRs. You had to go to live view and then select video mode. You held the camera like a cell phone. Then you were limited to 4K 30 fps which I found jumpy for doing landscape panoramas - my main desire for video. On both my R7 and R5 there is a video record button on the top of the body which instantly starts taking video while looking through the viewfinder. Also 4K 60 is available which takes stunning panoramas. I find I use this much more than I thought. Only issue is that 4K video produces large files. I may step back to 1080 and see if I miss much.

1080p looks great, but 4k60 is on another level, like looking through a crystal clear window vs a high quality screen. The 4k overheating issue with the R6 is why I want the Mk2. Once you get used to 4k, it's hard to go back.
