p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · a6700 + LAEA-5 + Minolta Lenses

Anyone tried out the 5 on the a6700 yet? I'm looking at picking up a 200/2.8 to share between it and my mono-modded rII and am avoiding the big zooms, so it's down to the Canon EF 200/2.8L II or the Minolta HS APO 200/2.8. I'm very familiar with both lenses and would be happy with either. What's pushing me toward the Minolta is the built in hood, because that's how close the choice is otherwise.

So far as AF, I know I'm not going to get native performance out of either, but some help on the 6700 would be better than nothing (reliable single shot's all I'm after). According to the Sony US website, the 6700 should be compatible with both the adapter and lens for stills. I just want a little assurance from from someone who's used the adapter and lens on this or any of the compatible cameras that's it worth the money.

Thanks in advance.

Brad

I have the older versions of both of those lenses, and both work alright when adapted to my A7RIV. I also tried an example of the HS, but it had more misalignment.

There is the advantage of stopped down focusing for the Canons when using them with native emulating adapters. Mine doesn't focus that well with those. Other Canon lenses like the 70-200 F4L focus better. The Minoltas have some focus shift which causes some focus inaccuracy using the LA-EA5 since Sony has only implemented wide-open focusing for A-mount lenses.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My Nikon smart adapter is the same way regarding aperture. It's why I have DoF preview mapped to the trash can button on the rII.

I have both of those lenses—AF on the Canon is much faster. I'm using the A7CR. I also find the Canon has more sharpness and contrast. But I love the character of the Minolta. So I keep both. My favourite is the Minolta AF 135mm f2.8 and it works beautifully on the A7CR!

Thanks, Joseph. I appreciate you sharing your experience. I got to test both locally before buying, and I agree with your summary. The Canon I used was a bit center sharper, which worked out well on the 6700. On my rII, I greatly preferred the across-the-frame performance of the Minolta, particularly for portraits. As much as I like both lenses, though, I decided the focal length and speed combination wasn't necessary enough on either format to push me to buy.

I am considering a 135, so thanks for the heads-up on the Minolta AF. Size and weight are perfect, MFD's decent, and it has a built in hood. That could be the right tele option when the 100-400GM's too much.
