Camera Suggestion?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Camera Suggestion?

I'm decided to close my photography business to focus on my main job and my kids as they get older.

I spent a lot of time shooting Canon, brief time with Nikon, back to Canon, brief foreray into Sony, back to Canon and now with Nikon (Z9 with 17-28 and 70-200).

With not shooting sports anymore or doing my underwater work, I'm at a point where I am free to move to whatever system I choose.

My previous time with Sony was relatively well received. Cameras did what they should and images were what I would expect (I believe I had a A7III), but tracking was a little lagging in that body for anything moving. What I really loved though were the quality of the lenses and the pricing of those lenses, which I assume are still exceptional. Ultimately, I switched because I was having a lot of trouble with triggering lighting from underwater.

Being that I haven't really kept up with Sony for a few years, what's a comparable camera from Sony to the Z7II or R5? I rarely need to shoot full electronic, so don't mind having a shutter. I would prefer it have more than 24mp to give me a little crop ability. No need for top end speed (frame rate) as I'll just be doing some family stuff, maybe the occasional landscape or wildlife work. I'm thinking A74/5 but want to verify.

Lenses will be 24 1.4, 35 1.4, 85 1.4 and maybe something with some reach (100-400 or so).

A7RV

If you are going to shoot significant action or BIF, then A1; otherwise, the A7R5 should more than fulfill your needs.

(As a note, I shoot both cameras).

Yea you're not in the heat of the battle anymore and the A7RV should not only feed your needs the AF is a tremendous not to mention the IQ with the 61mpx sensor. I have it and the little 6700 as well.

I would suggest a different take here.

Cannon R anything, Sony A7 anything, Nikon anything etc are all basically the same cameras. All are amazing at this point and all have amazing glass. You really can’t go wrong with any of them. Pros and cons can be argued but you just can’t go wrong IMO.

If getting out of the photo business and shooting more for passion, why not a Rangefinder? It may spark some new feelings of joy of photography and make it different, challenging and fun again. Used Leica M10r’s can be found pretty reasonably and the offering from third party M mount lenses is incredible.

Not for everyone but just a thought.

Also for the record I own some very nice Sony Glass with a A7Rv that I use mostly for professionally video stuff I do for my career in tech. I never take it with me when traveling or hanging with the crew. I take the m11/35 lux 10/10 times.

Good Luck! With so many options, you can have paralysis by analysis but in the end, it’s all amazing anymore.

For what you describe, I would get the Sony A7R5. I had the A7R4 and hands down, the R5 is much better. A review you might find informative is Dustin Abbott's.

I read this with envy as IF IF I was fully retired I would like to go back to Leica But I still am a working stiff and need the Sony A7RV and its glass. But I had a major run with Leica in my past Both the DMR and M8 units and more glass than can fit in a bag.

I have an A7Riv. It doesn't have the few changes that led to the A7Riva nor the most recent processors, menus, focus system, video and rear panel articulation of the A7Rv. At $2000 or so used, it also doesn't have the price tags of the new $3900 A7Rv, or $3200 A7Riva.

I'd probably stick with the camera I had, unless there's some issue. Why are you considering a change?

Going smaller. I'll never take my Z9 on vacation with me.

The a7 IV fits everything you described as wanting. 33mp, excellent focus and tracking, good for family, wildlife, and landscape. And it's significantly cheaper than the a7R V.

I understand none of the Sony are in the size range of a Z9, but you might look at the new Sony a6700, it's APS-C. Focus system and sensor is based on the a7rV. It is basically an a7rV in crop mode with fewer controls and a cheap EVF. There are options for decent glass that fits what you are thinking about. Sigma 16/1.4, Sigma 23/ 1.4, Sigma 56/1.4 and Sony 70-350G.

If you want a stop more light with FF. Then the choice to me is what quality viewfinder you want. The A7R5 has a top of the line viewfinder and everything you could want except a stacked sensor. The a7iv is a step down in most ways, but I'm sure would provide good family and vacation photos.

For me personally there are a lot of things I like about the a7rV. You can shoot raw at 26MP or 60MP depending on your needs. You can mix and match FF and APS-C lenses at 26MP without issue. The improvements in focus system and features as well as the best EVF. I personally chose the 70-350 in crop mode instead of a 100-400 due to size.

That's going to be a lot heavier. 3 fast primes are the same weight as your 2 lenses now, and then a 3lb lens is going to come out heavier. Maybe just get a z8 less than half pound heavier vs A7r5
