John -- Sorry to hear about your problems with the Batis 25. I've heard reports of some others with issues on this same lens, leading to the following example.
I had a friend get into photography just after the Batis 25 had been available. He bought the original 16-35GM and Batis 25 with a7R3, from Samys in Pasadena, CA. When we went out shooting at the Huntington Library and Gardens, I asked to take some test shots with the Batis, only to find out in processing that the focus was messed up (possibly due to a tilted element?), and I quickly advised him to return the lens (which he did). The upside was that Samys was great at exchanging the lens for him, providing him with a great copy. But that experience initially soured me to exploring the Batis line (especially coupled with its premium pricing).
That was the story until I started becoming aware of some magnificent images from Joshua Ong, and others, using the Batis 18 here on the FM forum. I was blown away and never forgot the image quality of these photographers.
Fast forward: prices came down on the used market, and reliability reports were consistently good, along with terrific imaging qualities.
So I happily jumped in.
I now own four of the five Batis lenses: 18, 25, 40 and 85. Except for one bum Batis 40 (which had been previously been worked on by Zeiss USA reps) that I returned to seller here on B&S and waited for a Zeiss exchange, everything has been incredible using this four lens set. I particularly like the 40 and am glad I was patient waiting for the replacement. I enjoy the light weight and Zeiss imaging, and am glad I was patient.
I hope you will be rewarded with a similar experience!
