There's a great spot on Miller Creek for Red-Headed Woodpeckers
I tried 1120mm on a previous outing with fair success.
Yesterday I tried 1600mm, the Nikon 800 6.3 with a 2x converter
While I previously got good results with eagles in good light at 1600mm, the little Red-Headed Woodpeckers were beyond my ability at 1600. Low keeper rate with a few OK images.
I will go back another day for a second try at 1120mm while these birds are in the area.

I'm inclined to agree with Morris. I would rather have one great shot ,over a handful of good shots. Ideally I want both
