I fall for it too sometimes. Trying to take pictures of the rare bird so far away you can't even tell which pixel is the bird when you have something common, closer, in good light, with a good composition right in front of you.

You did not ask for suggestions. Forgive me but on #1 (my favorite) I would slightly darken the bg and lighten the snowy to bring out more detail. I think the end result would be a greatly enhanced image.

Thanks! I am always open to constructive criticism and dialog. I always struggle with how much to lift shadows on something as brightly backlit as this. Sometimes I waver between a silhouette shot and full shadow lifting. I see your point and may tinker with it if printed.
