p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 500mm f4 Version I, question about extenders with R body

Hi folks, I did some searching and from what I've seen posted, the EF 500mm f4 (first iteration) should work with an EF extender (1.4) on an R5 body using the EF to RF extender. However I'm having no luck using an EF 1.4 mk II in this scenario. Could it be that the first gen 500mm F4 just can't accomodate that combination, or is something else going on. The lens works great with just the EF-RF adaptor, but I get F00 when I connect the 1.4. Just wondering what might be going on.

I don't have an EF 500/4, but FWIW I use both the 1.4xIII and 2xIII with the EF 300/2.8II with my R3 quite frequently (although I'm now using the RF100-500 if I expect to have enough light because its weight is so much easier to handle).

I have to rotate my older tc, removing the lens partly to rotate it in the mount seems to help at times. It doesn't seem to be making the connection. So you might try that

Perhaps try a different extender? You can also try cleaning the contacts on both the lens and extender.

Assuming it is a Canon adapter is it the standard one or with the control ring?

It should work. As mentioned above it's probably a connection issue.
Consider getting a 1.4x III. Although the 500/4 IS was designed to work with the 1.4x and 1.4x II, the 1.4x III is significantly better, especially the lower CA and better IQ towards the edges. The difference compared to the 1.4x/1.4x II is more noticeable with 45-50 MP bodies than the 20MP and lower bodies. You will want to use ES to obtain a high framing rate with the R5, but you probably already know that.

I have an EOS R and the 1.4x extender version 1. It works fine with the EF 500 f/4 version 1. The focus preset function of this lens is not supported on the R bodies.

Got it working, thanks for the responses, it was of course a simple contact cleaning that solved the issue.
