Another couple of images from Mark Metternich's Southwest workshop. We've seen his examples from this location previously. This was taken last week during the workshop. Nearly two hours of off-roading followed by a 1.5 mile hike. The journey itself was so much fun. We left at 3 am and arrived just in time to witness this sight.

Not quite. We got back to Page for lunch and then had to drive out to White Pocket. Sleep was secondary on this trip!

It’s so wonderful when all the effort pays off. Long drive, hiking in the dark. I am sure as you got close and first light approached you could see the clouds setting up nicely. Wonderful capture. Bob

This is so absolutely mind-boggling. I could not have been happier for the group. I should have at least taken one iPhone shot! 😁 But my priority is always that my clients get the Killer image and are set up well. You guys absolutely rocked! Thank you for trusting me to get you the goods. In my opinion, this place is a very sacred place and people are never the same after seeing it. I’m so glad to be able to share it with others!

You were too busy to get an iphone shot helping some of us (yours truly) get closer to the edge so we could capture this incredible view.

Gorgeous images, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the light on the earth and the clouds, it doesn't seem to match in terms of the direction and timing. Am I just not understanding the position of the sunrise/set for this spot, or are those *replaced* skies?

The sun is rising left of frame. Low clouds gives a glow to everything especially on the rocks. Just off frame are tall cliffs to my hard right and behind me all reflecting light. It’s a pretty tight space so you’re seeing a lot of reflection.

Nice job. I prefer the first. In the second, the sky is about the same luminance as the canyon, so there’s less separation in the composition.

One thing that stands out a bit is that the southwest facing canyon walls are more saturated than the northeast walls which are facing the sun. I feel I would reverse that to enhance the effect of the light coming in from the left side of the frame. Then darken the walls in shadow a bit to add more depth.

More winners from your trip. Definitely have to be there for the light first, but you also had to make the image come together, and you certainly have done that!
