Sadly, there has only been one whitewater slalom race at the local course this year. Worse, it rained hard the week before the event, which meant that while the water was moving faster, it was also higher and thus the waves and foam were flattened out. The result is less drama of boats bursting through the whitewater. Still, a blast to shoot and the course set up was a dream for direct athlete gaze from the spot I chose for the first run. All images shot with a 600 f4 wide open. C & C is always welcome.

These are super nice -- and that direct gaze ... you can't beat it. I'm going out of my way this year to shoot some things that are typically off my radar -- boxing, equestrian, triathlon, and yes, bowling. Just want to keep expanding my skill set ... wish we had a course like this. Looks like a blast!

It definitely helps that my son has decided this is a sport to pursue (he raced, but isn't in the photos... lots of learning still to do). The course is also quite literally in the middle of the city, tucked in down between a set of bike paths. The really cool thing about whitewater is that it flows downhill, meaning if you sit a couple of gates down the lens axis is usually level with the eyes. Plus, if it gets too hot you can always dip your feet in the river!

The one sport I'd love to try out is fencing. I keep asking the university club where I teach when their competitions are, but so far crickets.
