I was recently “gifted” a Canon 300mm f2.8L IS… Cosmetically, it’s gorgeous; optically, it’s got fungus in it which does affect IQ. Because Canon has it listed as beyond service life, they won’t touch it. Can anyone recommend a shop that would clean the lens and as importantly, calibrate it?

Since you are in PA, you may want to look around there. Two places which come to mind include:
1) https://www.royalcameras.com/lens-repair/
2) http://midwestcamera.com/

If the lens if functioning ok, cleaning the fungus out shouldn't be too costly and well worth the price of fixing.

Willow Grove, PA. Matt is great, and does repair work for several of the remaining camera stores like Larmon and NYCV in Southampton.

You can walk in with it and he will give you an idea of whether it is something he can repair or not. You pay part of the repair cost as a deposit and the balance upon completion, or at least that is what he was doing last time I was in.

Very encouraging to see a younger person doing this work. I doubt he is over 40.

Excellent suggestions! I’ll try the guy in Willow Grove first since I’m closer to him…

Thank you all very much!

Fungus causes flare, but doesn't seem to hurt sharpness much, if at all. One lens having fungus that I used picked up flare easily, but if I shaded it was still very sharp, you couldn't tell imo. Are you using a shade and keeping it shaded?

I'd rather have it cleaned depending on the amount of fungus, might not bother if it's a few spots, though. I don't buy fungal lenses mostly, it hurts the value, but, hey, a free 300/2.8 sounds good to me!
