R6 Mk2 Frame Rate Variability with Different Lenses

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · R6 Mk2 Frame Rate Variability with Different Lenses

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I have an R6 Mk2 and have found that some lenses don't seem to be compatible with the 40fps electronic shutter, even though the option is selectable through the Q menu. I was borrowing a 200mm f/2 and it seemed to be running much slower than other lenses I've used.

This was most noticable in the amount of time the buffer would last, I suspect it's only running around 20fps. I was also using it alongside an EF 400mm f/2.8 III which did not have similar issues. I can't find anything in the documentation around limits with certain lenses, does anyone know if such info has been published? I've used mine mostly with Sigma ART lenses (20mm, 50mm, 105mm) and had no issues getting at least very close to 40fps, same with the Canon 85mm IS. Does anyone know if this is just a byproduct of using on older lens design that can't keep up?

I'll be using it again in a few weeks time and aim to do a bit more testing to see if performance can be optimised by tweaking settings on the camera/lens, I was just wondering if anyone else had encountered similar issues with the R6 Mk2, or if there were any recommendations for specific things to try next time around?

Thanks in advance!

here is a supplement that mentioned many lenses and possibility to handle in high speed series mode

I don't have a definitive answer but rather want to say it's interesting you experienced this because the general understand appears to be that e-shutter has few fps speed limitations compared to the mechanical shutter modes. But it's possible most who have used older lenses in e-shutter H+ used cameras other than the R6II (or R8) that otherwise only reach 20 or 30, rather than 40fps. The 200/2 is not listed as supported in the above link, which isn't surprising considering it's a pre-2010ish lens. It's possible in e-shutter, regardless of camera, it might only reach ~20fps. With the R6II capable of 40fps, it would be much more noticeable that it's slower than other, newer lenses, than if used with the 20fps capable R5 or R6, or even the 30fps capable R3 or R7.

The only other factor I could think of, that could reduce the frame rate, was if the aperture was at a setting other than wide open. Was it?

I also noticed this clause in the above link:

Ambient brightness and other factors may reduce the continuous shooting speed.
If so, you can counteract slower continuous shooting by selecting [Suppress lower frame rate] for [Smooth] in [Disp. performance].
For details on [Suppress lower frame rate], refer to the Advanced User Guide.

I wouldn't have thought EVF display performance would be tied to the camera's fps capabilities, but perhaps it is a factor. I would think if this was the cause, then it would have also affected the other lenses you used that were able to reach 40fps. But maybe something to check anyway?

I have the EF 500 f/4 L IS introduced in 1999, the EF 200 f/2 L IS was introduced in 2008, but both appear to have the same construction/electronics. Below are listed the FPS I get with the R6 Mark II and lens shot wide open. I would think you would get the same results. I have never tested it stopped down.

EF 500 4 L IS - shot at ISO 10000, 1/1000 @ f4
• Electronic H+ 15fps
• ElectronicH 15fps
• Mechanical H+ 7.5fps
• Mechanical H 5fps

Thanks all, coming from the R6 I'm used to all the lenses playing nicely with the e-shutter!

I guess the upside is burst at 40fps are pretty limited, I'm using it at night to try and capture any fire coming out of the exhaust from cars at the track when they downshift into corners, so the increased frame rate is handy for that. Guess I'll just have to start harvesting kidneys in preparation for an RF mount version!
