As I started my walk around Kissena Lake, I spotted a great blue heron on the far shore. Knowing the area I realized I'd have to find a hole in the vegetation to get a photo from the other side. After walking back and forth a few times without seeing it I found it well hidden by some bushes and trees. I set up and waited to get a decent view and took the first photo with the leaves creating a vignette around the bird's head. After getting this photo that took many attempts, I moved down the shore line about 75 yards (meters) and had a clear view yet the smoke had returned to NYC and it was a hot day. I added my 1.7x TC to my 500 PF, composed and took a few images. I was not confident in what I would capture at such a long distance through a thick atmosphere yet was pleasantly suppressed when I opened the files. The image of the GBH drinking is cropped a bit and the one of it standing on the island is as composed. Even little islands like the one the GBH is on are crowded here in New York City.
