I plan to upgrade from my X-T3 to an X-H2. I'm interested to know how older/unlisted lenses, particularly the 16mm F1.4 R WR, resolve up with these high resolution sensors. Anyone have experience combining these two? Thanks in advance.

That’s not how lenses work. Any lens will resolve more on a higher MP body. Even a Coke bottle.

The *list* was a poor idea of Fujifilm. Your 16mm will be fine on the XH2. But a higher quality optic will resolve more, on any sensor.

I absolutely love how my 1m 1.4 renders on my xt5. Very sharp and contrasty wide open. It's my favorite focal length too. I have an xt5. However I would recommend finding a newer copy from the Philippines generation. To me it was noticeably better than an older Japanese copy I tried.

I cannot speak to the specific lens you ask about, as I do not own it. However, as a person who has used the x-system cameras for more than a decade now, I have a range of lenses of newer and older vintages. They all work great on the XT5.

As pointed out above, any lens will work at least as well on th higher MP sensor bodies as it did on lower MP bodies, and it should perform at least slightly better. There is never a downside to using the old lenses that is connected to the higher sensor resolution.

I have used several lenses that are not on the infamous (and quite worthless and misleading) Fujifilm list of "40MP ready" lenses... and they all perform very well on my XT5, gaining some image resolution from the other MP sensor. These include the old 27mm. f/2.8 (which is optically the same as the newer version), the 35mm f/1.5 (which performs very well at 40MP), the excellent 14mm f/2.8, and a few others that may or may not be on the list.

Interesting question.
I would also like to hear some user opinion how is this prime doing on such demanding sensor like X-Trans V in landscape photography scenarios (to have lot of details in large size prints)

Going from 24 MP to 40 MP is a decent jump, but it's not massive. The diagonal dimension of the image increases by about 30%, which isn't nothing, but isn't really enough to show noticeable differences for modern lenses.

If you were shooting on very old film lenses with an adapter, perhaps you'd notice some flaws using a 40 MP sensor. Or perhaps not, depending on the lens.

But all of Fuji's X-mount lenses are modern lenses. Even the 16mm was only released in 2015, which makes it, comparably, a new lens.

There are still plenty of people using old lenses on modern mirrorless cameras with great results. So try not to worry that much about "resolving power".

Film cameras could indeed only reach the equivalent of about 50 Megapixels on 35mm film (thats for low sensitivity black and white film). If you would convert microfilm (that would be extremely insensitive and ugly black and white film with a strong color cast) to be used on 35mm film, merely about 2 Gigapixel could be reached on 35mm film. So yeah, those old film lenses only support such low resolutions at best.

I would also like to point out that while certain applications require maximum resolution (science, macro, wildlife especially birds), more artistic applications have other lens properties as priorities. Nobody wants to count the skin hair in a portrait. I once did such a portrait with a Zeiss Makro Planar 100/2 and you really COULD count the skin hairs.

Your choice of RAW processor will make more of a difference in the final image quality than the small bump in resolution from the 40mp sensor.

There are many possible answers to the question of "how many megapixels can be captured in a 35mm film exposure?" I won't reignite this debate but the commonly accepted figure is around 8-15 MP for most 35mm film stocks.

But the important piece is that most consumer lenses were never intended to resolve up to the film's maximum resolution (in lp/mm); doing so was not cost-effective or necessary for most users. Plus the "practical" resolving power depends on a lot of other factors -- is the image in focus, what is the subject matter, what are the lighting conditions, what diffractions or aberrations are present, etc.

And do you notice that virtually no one noteworthy, influential, or famous is talking about lens or sensor resolving power?

Well, if you had no problems with them before, then going to the 40MP bodies will not have problems either. You get finer granularity in post with the greater number of pixels, which is nice.

If you use the latest super sharp lenses, then they will pop a bit more on fine detail like hair and cloth, but it's subtle.

OK, I can help here. I had an X-T3 and upgraded to the X-H2. I had the original 23 1.4, the 16 1.4 and the original 56 1.2. Took photos with all lens and the results were excellent, but it looked like the 23 & 56 were not up to the new sensor in best of conditions. the 16 1.4 was the best of the 3. Anyway, I traded all 3 in for the new 23, 56 & 18. The new 23 and 56 were definitely better than the older versions. These are incredibly sharp lenses. They really shine on the 40MP sensor. The 18, however, was not as good as the other two and frankly, a bit soft. I am sorry I got rid of the 16mm. That is an excellent lens and was a better focal length for me than the 18. So the 18 got sold and I replaced it with the 16-55 2.8 zoom. I have shot only primes for a few years. While getting excellent results, I kind of missed just walking around with one lens. The 16-55 is not as sharp or fast as my primes but it really is more useful. Anyway. Get the 16. One of Fujis best. IT will resolve just fine on the 40mp

The new lenses would also have been better on the XT-3.

Fuji X-H2S with stacking sensor under consideration but waiting in case next Fuji X-T with same 26.1MP stacking sensor. Not convinced 40mp sensor really necessary. My Fuji 16mm f1,4 made in Japan my reason to stay with Fuji APS-C.

Keep in mind that if you're viewing the image at the same size (like on a phone screen), the 16mm will look just as great as it always has. After upgrading my X-T3 to an X-T5, I found that the autofocus worked even better and the images still look fantastic.

The 16mm f1.4 WR and indeed all lenses perform better on the 40mp sensor than lesser sensors. Newer lenses might perform better still. The only issue is if you view at 100 per cent the image might look worse because you are looking at a bigger enlargement compared to say a 26mp sensor viewed at 100 per cent. However, when viewing or printing at the same size, output from the 40mp sensor will look at least as good as lower resolution sensors. The 16mm f1.4 WR is a fine lens, and if that is the focal length and aperture you want then it should meet your needs. It lacks a linear motor, which might be of concern, but AF is not slow.

poor idea is a very kind way of describing it. the 16-80 was on the list and yet there was an x-h2 kit with the 16-80 which is what i got

Very surprised by cwmoros recommendation of
newer copy of Fuji 16mm f1,4 from the Philippines as noticeably better than an older Japanese copy I tried. . More than satisfied with my old made in Japan copy. Please provide some proof of your comment?

The 16mm f1.4 wr lens is my absolute fave Fuji lens. I've shot it on xt2 xe2s xt3 xt5... Will never sell it.

I think that "optimized lens" list from Fuji is malarkey

Ye olde 35 1.4 is not on that list, but I've been using it on the X-T5 and it's fantastic. Also, Fuji doesn't have the 16-80 f/4 on that list, yet they sell the X-T5 with that lens as a kit bundle. Talk about left hand not communicating with the right foot
