p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 8-15mm Lens cap and hood?

I just picked up a secondhand Canon EF 8-15 but it did not include the cap for the rounded dome glass, and also didn't include a hood. For the cap, I have read that the OEM falls off easily and is poorly designed. I am curious if anyone has any alternative options that would be better before I buy the factory cap.

As far as the hood, I am wondering if that will show in the pictures. My principal use will be to capture smallish creatures (frogs, snakes, etc) or flowers up close (excellent MFD and associated magnification ratio) while including the surrounding habitat. Not sure if that makes a difference, but there you go. I was thinking it may come in handy if I am working prone on the ground to help protect me from accidentally bumping the glass into anything while trying to get close. Thoughts?

The hood will show up in the photos if you zoom out below 15mm on a FF lens. The lens was originally introduced when the 1.3 and 1.6 crop factors were very popular, then the zoom with the hood on was still very useful; on FF it's 15mm or hood has to come off.

I've owned the lens since it came out, and while it's true that the cap can come off, it's pretty hard to design a cap for a fisheye, especially a modular cap like the 8-15. I'm not aware of any aftermarket ones. If you want you could tape the cap to the hood, at which point it would be very solid - but then you could not use it with the hood on.

Never thought of using it for macro shots

Jared, I have the original hood for mine, and you are right it was loose. 3 pieces of gaffers tape folded over the inside edge, 120 degrees apart solved the issue for me.

Thanks for chiming in, fellas!

I have bought a replacement cap, just have to find a hood now.

Yes, stanj....the MFD is great and does well showing small critters in their habitat. If that sorta thing is your jam 😉.

And dhlewis- do you mean the cap is loose, or the hood? I haven't heard of any issues yet on the hood being loose.

Quick question- just got a cap for the 8-15 but no hood just yet. This thing does not fit. Shall I assume one needs the hood in order for the cap to fit?
