I have been loving my a6400 since I got it about a year ago! I am wanting to get into wildlife photography and looking for a lens. My eyes are currently set on the Sony 200-600. I have attempted to search the forums and only found a post or two talking about pairing it with the a6400. Anyone have experience with this combo? It seems that the largest concern is surrounded around autofocus capabilities for objects in motion.

Let me know your opinions and thoughts on this setup or if you have another lens suggestion!

I've used the Sony 200-600 with the a6400. The limitation will be the body, not the lens. Still, the a6400 is very good. That said, I almost never use the combo anymore. I mainly shoot full frame now and use a prime for most wildlife.

The other Sony native option is the 100-400. If you do flowers and insects it has better magnification.

If you upgrade to full frame, the 200-600 will be better than the 100-400 for wildlife in a lot of situations due to the extra reach. If you see yourself upgrading to full frame in the future that might be something to consider.

Thanks for the info!! I actually have the 90mm macro for flowers and insects! I was mainly looking for the reach and also future proofing for if and when I go full frame!

I use the 70-350 which is a super light less expensive option giving effective focal length of 525mm.

a6400 works fine with the 200-600.

Upgraded to a6700 now for the front dial and better subject detection and af.

I used the 200-600 on the A6400 when I owned it. Worked very well. I also owned the 70-350 and it worked well also.

One example

Sony ILCE-6400
Lens FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS
Focal Length 600.0 mm (900.0 mm in 35mm)
Aperture f/6.3
Exposure Time 0.0005s (1/2000)
ISO 2000

Great photo! I love how it is no longer a camera with a lens but a lens with a camera

Good morning.
The 200-600 mm is an amazing wildlife lens for the price, and as others mentioned, it would future-proof you if you eventually get a full-frame camera. I have used that lens with the A6600 and got some good BIF shots (see attached). I have also used the A6600 with the 100-400, but for birds that extra 200 mm reach is invaluable much of the time.

The negative of using the bigger lens would be the huge size difference between the camera (especially the 6400) and the lens. The Sony APS-C 70-350mm would be more comfortable to work with (and carry).

The 6400 has the same AF as the 6600. To be honest I found it to be a very frustrating camera, which had nothing to do with the lens combo. If I recall correctly, it was very annoying that while the camera had animal detect 'capability' it wouldn't work with AF-tracking. I think I didn't bother using the animal detect and instead just used Wide area AF (non-tracking) for BIF.

I suggest looking for posts by FM member "zackiedawg" who uses the A6600 & the two full-frame tele-zooms to great effect.

Cheers

Richard

I've tried it and really disliked combo. ( a6400 and 200-600 )

I have 20 years of muscle memory from using a camera with a centered viewfinder and a long lens, and this combo throws me off every time I use it.
It's fine for subjects that aren't a long ways off, but for that bird in a tree 50 yards away, it takes me way too much time to try to find it.

Also for me, I had to get a cage with a grip to have enough room for my fingers to hang onto the camera.
I love the lens, but I dislike using it with that camera.

Dave, I still have the wood handled grip I had on mine. There wasn't enough grip for me otherwise.

I still have it on the cage also.
I had to grind/sand out the handle to get my fingers to fit in-between the lens and the cage grip.
Don't mind the dust, this camera doesn't get used much.

More on the A6400. Many of the shots in this gallery are with the 200-600 with the A6400 behind it. The take-off and flight sequences are all with the A6400.
