I tried my best to time my visit up Mount Lemmon so that I could shoot just after a big monsoon passed over. The light is usually amazing at those times. I got up there and even though I only skirted the storm, I got hit pretty hard by the storm (hail and everything). Afterword, the light was amazing, but of course it was evolving quickly (moving storm, and setting sun) and there are just so many great vistas to shoot from. It was a little crazed as I bolted around the mountain trying to follow the light and get some decent shots. I don't think I got exactly what I went up there for, but there were still some keepers.

Thanks for the comments. It was such a great environment for photography. Not to mention it was 111 degrees (43.89 C for my non American friends) when I started driving up the mountain, but it was a comfy 64 degrees (17.78 C) at the top of the mountain. That was some very welcome relief from the summer heat in the desert.

These are all very nice, and you were brave to be up in an apparently exposed spot with lightning around. I agree that #1 is the best of the set.

By the way, monsoon is a season, not a single thunderstorm.

Thanks. It looks braver than it really is: that storm and the lightning is easily 25+ miles away. I know lightning travels, but that's reasonably far, and there are many higher, more exposed spots at my back.

About the word monsoon, it is absolutely a season, but it's also used to refer to the individual storms. I had no idea they even had a monsoon in the desert when I moved out here 24 years ago, but it is in fact a whole season in this part of the southwest. The locals call the individual storms monsoons as well. Go figure.

I'm wondering where our monsoons are vs last year. Spotty at best in the Prescott area.

We had a solid weeklong stint of major storms there for a bit. It's calmed down a bit, recently though.
