Cataract surgery, new eyes Q

OK, I had to, so I did, and now I have new eyes. I got IOL lenses installed in both eyes, and I can see 20/20 uncorrected for the first time, ever.

However, I need "readers" to see anything within three feet or so.

I found I can crank the diopter adjustment on my 7DII and 5D3 so I can use them with the readers on. What about mirrorless?

You should be OK, I have exactly the same issue.

I need readers too but wouldn't it be easier to adjust the diopter for no readers so you can see critters and landscapes sharp beyond the 1 meter? Well, that's what I do. I can't use the rear screen but the EVF is tack sharp.

I have progressive lenses, and it seems to me that despite being within a fraction of an inch of my eye, the view finder acts like it is at infinity. Unlike a DSLR where the focus point screen actually is very close to your eye, everything is digital. I may have to pay better attention next time I pick the camera up, but I think I'm using my distance vision (not the near vision part) and my diopter is set to zero. So not sure you would need diopter, but the adjustment is there.

I had mine done a couple of years ago and now 20/20 and I can adjust my R6II diopter with no problem.

OK, so it can be done, I just have to read the manual.

Online, which I hate.

Thanks.

You just rotate the little diopter control knob. It's self explanatory. I used to have glasses with an add of +3.5 just for reading the rear LCD,but no more with the EVF.

Yep. They shifted the location. For the past 20 years, I'd look on the right side of the viewer for the diopter wheel.

Canon, of course, had to move it. So when I took a quick glance, "damn, no diopter wheel". On the R7, on the left.

I am facing cataract surgery soon and need to choose between the lenses that correct to being nearsighted versus the lenses that correct to being farsighted. I definitely do not want to get one of each as I don't think I would adjust to that based on prior experience with contact lens trials. I have been nearsighted all my life so am well used to that, but from the various posts, it seems like most people here have chosen the farsighted. If you have any thoughts on this choice and how you made it or succeeded with it one way or the other, or tips, I would be grateful to hear about them. I use a DSLR and use the viewfinder to focus and frame, one with the diopter adjustment, so that should be ok either way. I suspect after surgery I may have trouble reading the live screen though with glasses, depending on what I choose. I am willing to continue wearing glasses for everything if I need to, as I am used to doing that my whole life. I mainly do event photography with some group shots and a few portraits within the events. Thanks in advance.

Congrats. I just got new cheaters myself. The only reason I'm posting this is because I messed up with my previous glasses. I got transition glasses so they got dark outside. They also had clip ons but the lenses themselves would get dark. For some reason I only really noticed it when I started shooting ML.

Between points and a two for one sale I got $1,600 worth of glasses for $450. Only caveat was they only offered clip ons with a blue tint. After decades of brown tint I felt like John Lennon with a bong.

I lucked out. It was not easy but found a place in the US that makes them. Prefect fit just like from the factory. They were on sale at almost half price and if you ordered a second pair it was half price as well. Shipped via Canada Post and arrived on the scheduled day.

Thought this may help someone.

While I have not had surgery, I do have a similar situation. My distance vision is fine, at or better than 20/20, but close up is shite. So I always have "readers" on my person. What I do is to slide the readers down my nose when using the viewfinder. Allows me to use a relatively neutral diopter setting and have my distance vision unobstructed for looking directly at subjects while still easily being able to glance downward and see the controls/menu or chimp when needed.

OK, I had severe myopia (as in, 20/450 range) with a goodly amount of astigmatism thrown in. The cataracts got bad enough I had to go IOL. I opted for distance, as I can easily have an array of readers for reading, working at the computer, etc. on hand. for everything else, distance is best. The left eye the doc put in a toric lens, to correct for astigmatism. That eye is now 20/20. On the right eye, my astigmatism was much less, and the smallest correction they can make a lens would have over-corrected me, and made it worse. So I didn't go toric there.

The right eye, when I pay close attention, is a bit fuzzier than the left, but still within the 20/20 measurement.

I now have cheap readers, a +1.75 for reading, and a +1.25 (I might go +1.00) for the computer. And my DSLRs and ML all have the diopter cranked for use with the readers.

I don't think I'd remember which side it's on. I only need to adjust it once—when I get a new camera.

My eyes are both distance. I can seethe dash in the car and everything far. Glasses for reading for 30+ years so NP. I too was afraid of mixing.

Another issue: color shift. Before my surgery, I could not get my color balance correct... blues were wrong, yellowy color shift. You may want to re-calibrate your monitor and go back and check your best shots for color balance. Seriously.

Yes, as we age (as I found out when I was one-eye corrected) our lens yellows slightly. All of a sudden, the left eye was seeing a blue-er world than the right. Our brains adjust, but with one eye done I could see the difference.

I wear +1.75 and and it's super easy to adjust the diopter, could go much further. Even the new DJI Goggles II work sufficiently well, if I want to play

I use the cameras with different purpose glasses. I just AF to eternity and adjust the wheel until EVF is sharp.

I happen to hate the new location. Right thumb was just fine in adjusting the wheel in the old location. Now it should be done with the hand that supports the lens making the distance to the wheel longer and it also locates nose as an obstacle.

The problems with sunglasses were also mentioned. The reason is pretty obvious: with OVF the scene brightness matches the VF brightness. If you need sunglasses, you need them also for the VF. Only the extra information becomes darker. In EVF that no longer works. Everything seems dark.

Prior to my cataract surgery my Ophthalmologist and I had this same conversation and he discouraged picking one short and one long lens as it is difficult for the brain to 'lock in' on both and balance the picture. Said it works for some but not for others but why take the chance?

I selected farsighted and now my vision is very, very good. The downside is readers are more important than ever and I have several laying around the house. Another issue is that outdoor light is now very bright and I wear sunglasses more than ever. For working with my camera the focus assist on my mirrorless has been a blessing! I also carry 'Clic' readers around my neck all the time.

Good luck

Just throwing this out for those who are facing the surgery. For me, I no longer need any glasses or adjustment at all for the first time in my life. The new lenses fixed everything.

Background: Always farsighted since a kid... eyeglasses and contacts. Then Lasic around 37 years and my farsight was astounding, but in just few years, on went the readers. I think they kind of over-corrected me.

Then the cataracts... for this, the surgeon recommend he use the laser to cut for better accuracy (?). He noted that given I had Lasic, he would get better results with the laser. Downside was I had to pay extra, insurance would not cover the laser tool. Only cost me like $2K so of course.

Now, vision is like perfect. I only use readers to read my android phone in bed when I keep it right at my face.

Peace
