So I'm thinking it can't be done, but I'm wondering if anyone has figured out how to display true HDR to an external HDR capable TV (or monitor) that takes an HDMI input connection from an M1 Mac. You need HDMI 2.0a support to do this, and I think M1 MBPs or Studios only support HDMI 2.0. I thought I might be able to do it using a Thunderbolt to HDMI 2.1 adapter or cable, but those that I've found say they won't work on a Mac, just Windows.

I've been experimenting using the new HDR capabilities in ACR (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1789059/0?keyword=HDR#16130555) and was hoping to be able to use my LG OLED TV as an external display.

I'm pretty sure it's going to work with an M2 Mac which supports HDMI 2.1, but don't want to go out and get one of those since I have the M1 version which has plenty of compute power....

I upgraded my HDMI cable to one that's HDMI 2.1 certified, and this worked with the M1 MBP despite Apple saying the M1 MBPs are only HDMI 2.0 vs. HDMI 2.0a.

Figuring out how to get that true HDR goodness on an external TV/monitor with your M1 Mac can be a puzzle, huh? HDMI 2.0a vs. 2.0, Thunderbolt to HDMI 2.1 adapters – it's like a tech maze. 🤯Using your LG OLED TV as an external display sounds like a dream, but sometimes compatibility plays hard to get. It's a bummer those adapters aren't playing nice with Macs, especially when you've got that M1 powerhouse at your disposal. If you're on the hunt for media solutions, give the "so player" a whirl. Sometimes, it's about finding the right tools to enhance your setup. And yeah, M2 Macs might have that HDMI 2.1 mojo, but hey, your M1 isn't backing down either.
