Understanding monitor calibration?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Understanding monitor calibration?

I have a BenQ monitor that's spec'd as having 100% sRGB coverage. I've never calibrated it.

I have noticed that prints do look quite a bit different than my monitor's rendering of the image.

I might look into calibrating my monitor, but I know basically nothing about this process...

I make most of my prints using DNP dye-sub printers, or a Canon Pro-1000.

I'm assuming that in order to get my monitor to match my printers, I'd have to make a print profile for each printer, which I would suppose involves some kind of spectroscopy to actually look at some prints that come from the printer?

Can somebody give a very basic understanding of how this process works?

There *is* no basic explanation.

Your monitor doesn't get calibrated to a printer- monitors, printers, and projectors get calibrated to be as close to perfect as is possible. Then, hopefully, images look correct on all devices. BTW, your camera also needs "calibration".

I was going to try to locate a site I've read in the past, but there's so many results for 'color workflow' that I gave up.

That spec of 100% sRGB color doesn't mean your monitor is *accurate*.

Sorry, I think I have muddled things up even more.

Here is a link ot a pretty decent tutorial about color management. I believe it does a pretty good job of walking one through the various concepts color spaces, monitors, and printing in a color managed workflow:

Hope this helps
