p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Greater than 1:1 macro magnification without a macro lens

Hi,

I realize that this would be most easily accomplished with the 90G or Sigma 105 with an extension tube, but since I don’t shoot macro much, and decided to pass on the 90G, I’m wondering whether anyone here has done greater than 1:1 magnification work with a non-macro lens. I think that my 70-200 with an achromatic magnifier and the 1.4X TC should do it for some casual work and will try it over the next few days. However, I would love to see whether anyone has any examples of some super magnified images taken without a dedicated macro lens. And of course it would be great to see a photo of your jerry-rigged setup. Thanks in advance!

I've seen a lot of discussion on the 70-200/4 II w/the 2xTC, curious how it performs with the 1.4x - which is the one I have.

Greater than 1:1 is where a real macro lens proves it's worth. Flat field matters when DOF is so small.
At 1:1 you can get about 1/3 of a Dragonfly's eyeball in focus. Beyond 1:1, DOF keeps reducing. So many options with just LAOWA now, or any used macro from any manufacturer is a cheap way to get good high magnification results.

Not sure if Nikon 6T on 75-300 v3 got closer than 1:1 but definitely close.

Already had m42 all metal extension tubes ($10.99 keh,) got a 50/2 mamiya sekor <$20 ebay (look our for radioactivity on old 50mm, this has no yellow,) had fun and could get closer than 1:1 since I had 60+mm of extension tubes .

Reversing ring can get close, might improve quality

This:

Also at true 1:1 getting usable images with enough in focus starts to get challenging, greater than 1:1 and you have to get into focus stacking to get usable images,

The original 70-200/2.8 doesn’t focas as close as the new one so will be less effective with tubes/close up filters etc
