Apparently Canon there have been hundreds of complaints regarding R series wobbly, deffective hot shoes that come loose. However, Canon has not officially addressed this and charges a good bit of money for "repairing" their obvious poorly designed hot shoe after your warranty expires.

So, my question is if this poor design was corrected in the R8? I'm thinking of possibly getting a back up for my delicate R6 for when the hot shoe breaks or other failure occurs.

I believe the problem was mainly on the old style shoe used on the R6 and R5. All the new models have a different design—multi-function shoe (with with power supply and digital connections added). I've owned the R7 for over a year now and so far the shoe is solid. My R6 MK II can brag it had no problems so far (since last Fall). Also very little complaining about the new shoe from forums and FB groups so apparently it's a better design than the old shoe traditional shoe.
