Hi FM,

I’m currently at the South Rim and looking for photo inspiration/location. I’m here with family and friends, and initially I wasn’t able to pencil in landscape time, but things changed and now I have a sunrise and sunset opportunity.

I’m thinking Mather Point, but open to others.

Fortunately I brought some of my gear, but nothing wider than 35mm, and I have my RF 70-200.

I would love to see what fellow FMers have captured at the south rim.

Mather Point is pretty convenient for sunrise and you aren't likely to be alone. Sunset, maybe Lipan Point or near the Desert Watchtower. I posted some a while back from a winter trip and as I host them at Pbase, my sizes were off. I'll resize a couple and see if I can repost there, then here. It may be too late but get an early start to the sunset points ifyou can, parking and/or shuttles may be limited.

Thanks, my plan’s to arrive an hour prior to sunrise and sunset. Think that’s enough time?

Might be, I wasn't there in the summer. Probably ok for sunrise, maybe a risk for sunset. There's quite a bit of parking near Mather Point, less so at many other spots.

Fantastic shots! Wish I could visit during the snow season.

Really wishing I’d brought a wider lens right about now.

Thank you. The snow and weather changes were stunning - not as much snow as might happen but still quite a bit. Highways were dicey. I'm from the L.A. area, neither snow nor snowy highway driving are things I'm too familiar with.

Stitch! Briefly, paying attention to horizon and sky and foreground, figure your exposure and focus setting, go manual, turn to portrait, carefully pan, again keeping an eye on the horizon and desired frame top and bottoms, overlap 30% to 50% or so, then you can stitch in several postprocessing programs.

You can always stitch, but the canyon is so vast and the landscape so large there that I would hope you could make something wonderful with the gear you have with you.

I like Mather Point. But it's way to crowded for the most part. I prefer the lookouts off of Hermits Rest Rd.

Specifically Powell Pt., Hopi Point and Pima Pt.

Of course to access this you have to take a bus which I believe runs every 10-15 mins? Or if you are handicapped you can request a pass to drive your car on Hermits Rest Rd.
