I guess I missed the point, sorry for my OT comments. I obviously see more detail, incredible detail in a well captured, properly processed raw file at full size. I also see however a level of detail held onto in the downsizing of these files for web that exceeds other systems.

Everyone has their own set of expectations of what constitutes expected IQ out of their systems. I think the photos on the top of the previous page are a great example of what I'm talking about though. Nothing about them indicates they were taken with a cutting edge 100mp medium format camera, as almost all of the detail has been lost, either through processing, downsizing, whatever.

The idea of "downsizing for web" is a thing of the past IMO. We're trying to view people's work on 5K monitors, posting the full resolution jpeg and letting FM size it for the width of the viewer's monitor is the best thing you can do to display it at max quality for each user.

As someone trying to judge the merit of a camera (in this case the 100S), it's nearly impossible to do when examples are posted that look like they could be from a m4/3 camera. This seems to be a common theme on the GFX image threads, and I'm trying to suss out why that is. For now, it most certainly seems to be a result of the post processing methods being utilized, as I'm not seeing the same output when using my standard post workflow on the RAW files.

Many thanks to K-H.A.W. for sending me the RAW file so I could answer my own question!
The RAW file is, IMO, "sharp enough" without additional sharpening. However, running LR Enhance on it cleans it up nicely but still avoids the oversharp look.
The look I'm seeing/commenting on in this thread is certainly from the sharpening step of post processing being run in PureRaw.

You are welcome Scott and many thanks for the pointer to LR Enhance.
Also many thanks for your observations - you are correct. I agree and thank you.

AFAIK DxO PR4 was recently (March 2024) introduced and new to me.
For previous versions of DxO PR I never separated out the various features built into it.
In particular I never mentally separated denoising from sharpening.
DxO PR4 makes that easy.
In addition to those 2 functions it also deals with vignetting, chromatic aberration, and lens distortion.

The first image is processed in Capture One with default parameters.

The following 5 images were generated with DxO PR4.
I only varied the sharpening setting - referred to as Lens softness - in this order.

• Lens softness (none)
• Lens softness (soft)
• Lens softness (standard)
• Lens softness (strong)
• Lens softness (hard)

Comparing these images one can clearly see the artifacts introduced into the images through over-spatpening.
Before you pointed that out I didn't pay any attention to that. Sorry about that.
Here hoes:

• Lens softness (none)

• Lens softness (soft)

• Lens softness (standard)

• Lens softness (strong)

• Lens softness (hard)

It seems to me the none or soft setting of DxO PR4 is similar to the default settings of Capture One.
What do you think?

Using DxO PR4 makes more sense for high ISO images and lower performing lenses.

Scott, thanks again for your help, Karl-Heinz.

Instead of the standard sharpening setting in C1, try this: amount, 400%, radius, 0.4, threshold and halo at 1. The difference is subtle, but improves high frequency detail.

I caught some of the aurora that made a rare visit to my area last Friday night. I'm sure this doesn't look like much to those who live much further north and get grand displays, but it was a treat to have even a modest show of celestial colored light here. I bounced around to a few locations to get the right view and this was my favorite, taken at around 12:30 am (Saturday).
