Not sure if I was able to convey what I felt at the scene properly, but I found taking this shot a particularly peaceful experience.

Eric, I think you did a wonderful job conveying the serenity of the scene. If I may offer a piece of constructive crit, I think perhaps framing the butterfly to the left of the frame would work better, strictly from a composition point of view. Otherwise, a vertical crop placing the monarch in the intersection of the upper middle and upper left third. Because the monarch is facing rightward, I would like to see the monarch have some more breathing room to the right of the frame to convey a sense of direction.

I like this image Eric. Having the butterfly face into the image might keep the viewer's eyes in the frame longer.

Thanks for the comments! And I mostly agree, but butterflies don't take direction well and the background to the right was in deep shadow without the same bright yellow flowered bokeh possibility. I intentionally shot it that way for the background. I suppose I could flip the butterfly horizontally in Photoshop, but then I'm beyond the realm of photography and just piecing together an image.

Personally, I kind of liked the sense of isolation the BF right-hand look gives and adds a lonely sentiment to the feel.

Lastly, I don't know if you are clicking the image to view "full screen" or not, but you should because there is more room to the right in the image even on a 2K screen because its 16:9 ratio, you might find it a bit more balanced when viewing the full image.

The butterfly did not turn and look the other way when asked, how strange :-} The photo fits nicely on my 4K monitor. Challenges like this is some of what makes wildlife phytogeography challenging and fun.

Love it. The monarch’s facing out of the frame does not really bother me here. Good reasons for choosing to do so to include that beautiful yellow bg. Well done!

yellow is one of my favorite colors so i immediately liked the picture. the butterfly and flowers together bring out the simplicity of natural beauty that can easily be overlooked in our busy world. thanks for sharing.

Yes, yellow is a mood lifter for me also. I always am one to notice when a little wildflower pop's up in a sidewalk crack or in the city. It's like nature is always struggling to do its own thing, regardless of everything going on around it.
