What Kirk photo debacle?

I've always had good experiences with Kirk products...did they mess up their Z8 bracket?

Their servers crashed when orders opened up for the Z8 L-bracket. Some people inadvertently got charged for multiple orders. Eventually Kirk had to back everything out and start all over again.

That doesn't lower the quality of the kirk bracket or after-sales support, it's just a technical glitch, not a debacle. Every reason to continue with Kirk. It just means that a) the bracket was super-popular and b) they weren't ready for it.

My policy is to never buy anything from Leofoto I can get from other vendors.

To me they are a rip off company stealing designs from Really Right Stuff.

If you want to avoid companies that steal designs, I guess you would only buy from Arca-Swiss...

They just haven't added it to their online catalog yet.

When they invoice you, they should also apply their current 20% off promo, which just about pays for the cost of shipping.

It may well be... but judging from the products I've bought from both companies, Leofoto's quality and fit are a lot better than Smallrig.

It's a false equivalence. A small copy (the AS concept) is different from a complete copy. And RRS / Kirk are western companies, which is a bonus compared to the Leofoto / Smallrig alternatives. And RRS at least doesn't misuse the trademarked "Arca Swiss" designation, nor does Kirk.

There would be a long list there as they failed to do due diligence on their on their original patent and failed to follow-up and correct. They left the door open. There are those other companies that just simply ignore legal enforceable patents. Just a small difference.

Assuming there actually are patents on the RRS/Kirk products, if the patents were legally enforceable the other companies wouldn't be able to import their versions.

I would rather deal with a company that offers a nicer made version of an obvious concept at a fair price, and doesn't rip me off by marking up their shipping costs by 500%.

yes there are on certain products you can assume that. as far as the import there have been companies that have been restricted on importing such items when actions were taken.

fair price: well for most its bargain basement. sources that manufacture items similar to the originals and do little or no design work, support from their govt, pay their people considerably less money vs here (including any additional benefits) tend to have a distinct advantage in less costly production.

your term "obvious concept" has a rather open meaning as does "fair price".
