p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Return of the Cattails

Phragmites have just about replaced the native Cattails here in the New York Metro area. Recently the NYC parks department as well as the National Parks Service have been planting Cattails. On my walk around Oakland Lake I spotted this lone and loved the symmetry I saw as well as seeing them again.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

Nice to see Morris. Around here they are usually loaded with pink egg sacks of apple snails at the water line.

nice shot morris. i was surprised when you said they had almost died away in your area. i guess i had assumed cattails always thrived once they were established. nice use of the vertical lines in the picture.
thanks for sharing.

Thank you Eric,
I'm surprised there no RWBB were feasting on the seeds

Thank you,

The phragmites choke the cattails out.

Oh, I so appreciate this, Morris!

As someone who's worked in natural resources and riparian areas in particular, I have a special aversion to Phragmites. I hope the restoration efforts are successful as turning the tide on Phragmites seems really difficult to do.

Having moved from far-Western NY to the Finger Lakes region a few years ago, I was dismayed to learn that Narrowleaf cattail (Typha angustifolia L.) that is almost as prevalent here as Phragmites, is also an invasive (or sure acts like it).

I was initially drawn to the vertical lines, but also appreciate the contrast of color b/t the cattail and the various shades and focus of the green foliage.
