Amateur hobbyist here. First day with the A1+200-600. Seems like a lot of noise in my BIF photos. Not sure if it's user error or possibly a lighting or distance issue or improper expectations. Shooting shutter priority with auto iso. Cranked up the shutter speed for the swallow's. Thoughts?

The A1 is a great camera, you need to do some serious reading on what to expect from it. You can't take a photo that's that small in the frame and expect to blow it up to full screen.

Thanks. I had seen a few heavily cropped images that looked pristine on here with the A1.

If you have a specific problem with Nikon or Canon gear, you are more likely to get better feedback on the Nikon or Canon Forum. So what is your problem with advising to OP to ask the same question on the Sony Forum?

And I have no knowledge about the A1 that the OP asked about.

Hi Gooby, your expectations are too high. We used to have a very active member who talked about "pixels per duck". An extreme crop on a small bird like the swallow at higher ISO is always going to show a lot of noise and loss of detail. AI Denoise programs can help. For example, if you crop to keep the 3 top ibis and denoise, I think you might have a pretty clean pic.

The noise in the image will be there with any camera, and you can find a lot of controlled test reports online comparing the noise levels among the flagship cameras under various settings, and while Sony A1 may not be the best camera on that metric, it is quite competitive. That being said, with such huge crops, the noise will become a lot more apparent and that again will be true and comparable among all flagship cameras.

Steve Perry's video here is a good explanation on why cropping makes images look more noisy:

And the images you have probably seen with large crops have certainly been through some sort of noise reduction in post...

OK I think I got the hang of it a bit better. Lighting, humidity, and distance were all major factors in the photos on day 1.

First pic and second pic are the same, just cropped and ran through dxo pureraw per suggestion.

That last pic, accidentally left it on shutter priority because they move so fast and took it at 1/5000 but it still came out OK.

Getting better! I'm thinking my shutter speed was a tad low? I'm also not really sure how to edit well in LR. I used DxO Pureraw to remove noise but I usually just use the presets and auto on LR, so I need to learn more about that.

I just realized that I left my EV on +1.7 accidentally for the Tern... the A1 knob wasn't locked in place and I was wondering why I was getting zebras on the birds. That explains it!
