I used the EF 24-105 3.5-5.6 iS STM for 5 years. It was the kit lens for my 6D MK II. I planned to sell it but it was actually very good, slightly better than my ancient EF 24-105 4L IS USM, so I sold the old L zoom instead, mainly because the STM motor was so much smoother for movie servo than the horridly abrupt and jerky ring USM. The EF 24-105 3.5-5.6 iS STM is not a well liked lens around here but is a minor hidden gem.

Thanks for the recommendation, EF 24-105/3.5-5.6 might be a good option. Looks like mpb has them <$300 used. Not sure what to make of the Rf 24-105/4-7.1 or if it'd be a good lens for me, vignetting might be a bit high at 28-35 even if I skipped the big problemswith 24mm end

I could get along OK at 7.1 probably, not really interested in lesser quality optics though just because it costs less. Even 1970's budget option lenses like 28/3.5, 75-150, etc still can be excellent imo.

There's a thread about the RF 24-105 STM here.

The OP links to this Optical Limits review.

I generally won't repeat my impressions about this lens, which can be read at the end of the forum discussion. I'll just say it's a competent lens. Images generally have very good color and contrast and don't look 'bad' in a general sense, both technically and subjectively. Once you pixelpeep and/or put the lens in difficult situations, then it will show flaws more readily than more expensive options. Pixelpeeping at 24mm will reveal soft edges/corners, but the lens recovers very impressively by 28mm. It's unfortunate Optical Limits only tested 24mm and 40mm at the wide end - too big a gap IMO. Unfortunately TDP jumps from 24 to 35. I believe this behavior is similar with the 24-240 (it's actually worse at 24mm than the 24-105 STM), 14-35/4L and possibly other Canon wide zooms that rely strongly on software correction at the widest focal length - zoom just a little and things look a lot better.

IMO the RF 24-105 STM produces photos along the lines of using your phone's camera. View the full image on the small screen and be happy with what you see. Don't zoom in and expect more than you paid for (relative to other contemporary lenses).

Back to the 28/2.8 pancake - in this respect I strongly feel one gets more performance than expected for the price point, based on what I've seen from others up to now. While it has only been a few with hands-on feedback, it's encouraging no one has yet been disappointed with it.

Optical Limits review is up:

In summary: Very sharp, mid-high vignetting and distortion (both well corrected in software profile), flares a bit. Highly recommended.

My browser wouldn't load those images because the links aren't HTTPS, but after manually approving the insecure connection (obviously fine for images) I found them wonderful! Very interesting subjects, great colors too. How cropped are they, besides the aspect ratio?

Thanks! Yeah, I'm aware of the https-problem and need to update my server. Some browsers don't show simple http-pages in the standard-setting.

The images were cropped in dfferent amounts, but it wouldn't have made any difference, because they were taken at f8 and are as sharp in the edges as they are in the center. Here's another one, without any cropping (f11 for DOF):

A useful selection of farther distance scenes at f/5.6-f/8, which for me would be a realistic use of this lens. It looks very good. Measured barrel distortion is 4.11% prior to auto-correction.

@matejphoto@@, @thedruid@@, thanks for the link. It looks like you get really excellent performance in terms of sharpness & contrast on this lens. So thankfully it doesn't look like they used computational imaging just because it's the latest tech or something , so that's a relief

4.11% a bit high I think uwa zooms tend to have between 3-4% though. Not too bad. Concerned about the vignetting since I use high iso shouldn't be a problem though for most users. Very High performance a reasonable tradeoff imo

Vignetting will be much lower once you correct just the distortion. It won’t be that bad.

Well, yeah, that site is one of the best out there? Been reading them for over 15 years now.

Yes, they definitely provide a useful resource. Their measurement data are very valuable.

Generally I think they put waaaay too much importance in corner quality at high apertures. I never understood why anyone would care about corner sharpness of a 50mm @f/1.8. Sure, it would be nice if it is super sharp but I can't see many situations where I would care. The only one where anyone would care about corner sharpness at highest aperture I see is astro.

I've noticed that lenses with poor corner sharpness also tend to also have plenty of coma at the larger apertures—e.g., EF 50 1.2L and EF 50 1.8—and that does matter for astro.

Because they've demonstrated that good lenses can be sharp all over ever at wide apertures? I would rather have lenses that are sharp from the get go, and not just in the center, because I shoot a lot of stuff at night when stopping down (very much) is not viable. Of course the shallow DOF becomes a problem then, so it's a multi-faceted issue.

But again, this 28 looks like it can throw down with the best of 'em. Looks like one of the differentiators in favour of the RF system, even though I've firmly decided to stay away from it.

According to Optical Limits this lens seems to be in the same class (sharpness wise) as the Otus’ and Apo Lanthars. 5000 pw/lh in the center and 4500 in the far edges. So it must be one of the sharpest lenses that Canon has ever made?

It seems a really good lens and considering price and image quality is a super value. The only thing that I don't like is the sunstars that is not great.

Sharpest lens ever made not sure, in the center the 28-70 is even higher, optical limits did not test super tele and did not test on 45mpix 85 1.2, 70-200, etc..

Yeah, I was confusing their metrics with those I've seen elsewhere (lp/mm). Either way it looks very good from a sharpness standpoint. Very good out into the corners and edges. So should be great for walkaround travel/architecture/landscape stuff.

Haven't really had a chance to test this lens out yet. But here's a picture of a cat at f/2.8. Didn't really do any processing on it except for setting sharpness at 1.0 in DPP.

https://imgbox.com/ouqlSvlP

Overall I think I'm fairly satisfied with this lens so far. Definitely a nice lens to have when you want to keep things light.

I received my copy last week; initial testing makes me think it's a winner: seems super sharp - much sharper than the 16mm 2.8 and - to my eyes - just as good as the 24-70 2.8. Nice colors and contrast too. Focus is fast enough. Seems like a great one to have in the bag for travel etc.

A cat shot on the R5 @ iso 3200 (no noise reduction) and f/2.8; full jpg:

To be fair, 28 Rf seems excellent, and to be fair Canon isn't the only one fixing sub par lenses in the computer. This quote from the Rf 24 105L opticallimits test :

"Most mirrorless camera manufacturers (Hello Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Fuji) rely on image auto-correction thus, they are under-designing their lenses. To some degree, this can make sense if minimizing size/weight is the goal (or profits ...). This is only our 2nd RF lens review, but so far, it seems as if Canon does not share this philosophy - which is a good thing in our book."
