Bob,
Cameras in the Sony A7r-line, including the current A7r V, are more designed to perform well where resolution is the priority. With each iteration, there is a steady increase in the AF performance over the years but its AF is still lagging behind the A9/A9 II and, of course, behind the A1.

The A7r III is 2 models behind the current one. It is still a great camera for landscape, studio and portrait, etc. though.

I found that the RIII hit a sweet spot of usability, image quality, and features, at least for me. The prices on the used market have been very good to excellent lately. Not going to be the best action camera these days, but as said above, still excellent for most subjects.

The sensor in the Mark III was really perfect for me. Enough resolution for cropping and lots of exposure headroom. It scored a perfect 100% according to dxomark. The denser Mark IV sensor is too much file for most applications. The a7R V options to select smaller raw file output sizes is ideal and I'd get the Mark V purely for that feature. Sony added it to the a1 via firmware but I doubt it will make its way into the a7R IV.

There was a huge improvement in AF performance between the a7R III and IV. Apparently another improvement of equal magnitude from IV to V.

It's the camera I still use to today for landscape photography. Amazing body with great battery life and feels just right in the hand. The sensor resolution is great and the weight isn't too heavy. Dual as card and a nice evf are definitely pluses. It's doesn't feel laggy but it's definitely outdone by the newer cameras. While the touchscreen is limited getting around the camera is fairly smooth. And nowadays they can be had for a 1000 which is really nice.

I hear good things. I"m using the A7R4, and its AF and speed is great for a 61MP body. Its still a little odd for me coming from a DSLR to an EVF. DSLR has ZERO lag (its a mirror), EVF is just different.

The a7RIII is actually a sweet price for used ones with great features.

A lot of camera for a smaller amount of money. Unless your 100% sports/bird shooter I would endorse the a7R3.

The a7R III served me well and is a great camera. The biggest annoyance for me was not being able to change aperture while the card was being written to. May sound silly, but drove me a little crazy.

I've moved on to the a7R V and I'm very happy.

I am still using an A7Riii and it does a great job for me. But I am not an action shooter at all, in fact I only had one AF lens when I bought the (used) camera. As already mentioned if AF speed/tracking is important the succeeding generations are a better choice, for a price. Otherwise the A7Riii is a great value to me.

The A7R III is the body I transitioned to from my Canon 5d3 and it continues to impress me. I have no intention to upgrade to either the a7RIV or A7RV....in fact I plan on purchasing an extra III to have a backup.

Great sensor/image quality. It has an older generation AF, UI and handling that I personally would never go back to, but in the right hands, it is very much a quality image maker.

I acquired A7r3 when it was very new, and I still happily use it for landscapes etc. As mentioned the sensor is ecellent although the camera is slow for fast phased photography. However, When I moved Frmon Nikon D810 to to A7r3, I considered Sony being much faster. Now I could not shoot fast action with anything less than A9. Everything is relative

A7r3 is a seminal camera for Sony with Z-battery and improved af and ergonomics. I consider it as the first mature A7 series camera. Since A7r3 evolution of A7 series has been incremental (although latest Sony cameras are clearly better overall).

If/when I upgrade, I will propably keep A7r3.

I have two bodies over 5 years, each with more than 210000 shutter actuations (+ add another 100-150k with silent shutter).

Both are really workhorses, I use them for weddings, family photos, portraits, documentaries, food, travel... and sometimes for sports.

I like the reliability, the durability of the body, the very high image quality, the fast enough shooting speed and fantastic battery life.
What bothers me is slow startup, slow writing to SD cards, very slow photo zooming when reviewing and of course the quality of the LCD (brightness and resolution).

After such intensive use, the rubber on the grip is gradually peeling off, but it still holds in place.
The buttons work great except the shutter release - it didn't respond well to pressing it halfway after prolonged shooting, so after 2-3 years I switched to focusing with the back button.
Ergonomics/body size are fine after adding the l plate, the hand grip could be a little bigger (bulkier).

I just sold mine. Probably should have kept it. Such a fantastic body! fast enough for everything. and still the best sensor Sony has made.

I picked one up earlier this year as a step up from my 8 year old A7.

For me..... really good enough human/animal eye AF, I very rarely worry about what ISO I'm at for general walkabout shooting, auto ISO w/minimum shutter speed, better battery life, better zebra control, can program the focus hold feature, silent shutter, built-in intervalometer.....

Really works for a great rice for what I want & need.

I do also have the A7 though.

If Sony releases a 42 meg camera in a7rV body, i will upgrade my a7rIII.

As one can tell, there are a lot of fans for this body when used for the appropriate genera’s. It is one of Sony’s most beloved bodies. For stills photography, where the subject isn’t particularly fast moving, and you require high resolution, it’s pretty ideal. Yep it lacks some of the niceties of the RV but there’s also a significant price difference. It’s pretty amazing that the RIII came out back in 2017, and still can compete with the Z7, and Canon R5 for stills photography.

A7Riii is good enough if you are not taking high speed photography with a nice price tag if you get a used one. If you have more budget you can get a7iv which will has less but similar pixel results, and better focus speed. Plus A7iv has better video
