p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Hyenas a Plenty

Hyenas are one of my favorite species in Africa, with great family structure and cute pups. They definitely don't deserve their reputation and just want to eat, feed their pups and be left alone!

Comments always welcome,
Bob

Nice collection of shots of Spotted Hyenas.
I really like the third one.
The pups in the last one need a bath! Too much fun playing in mud.
I am surprised the hyena in the first shot tolerates the Black-back Jackal so close.

Hi Dave, thanks for the thoughts! The hyena and jackal were both eating the same buffalo remains and looked up just as I shot that.

Very nice set Bob, they sure don't waste any food i Africa. The last shot is quite something like a little bunch of piglets that have been digging in the mud.

Great set Bob. #1 & 3 are extra nice especially #3.
I respect your love for these critters and can relate. However from what I've seen of these guys (never photographed or experienced first hand), I actually dislike them with a passion. Their eyes are so evil and seem soulless and empty. To me they are the trailer trash ruthless killers of the animal kingdom. But again, you have first hand knowledge and experience with them where I have none, other than watching many wildlife documentaries.

Thanks Dave, in the last shot they were part of a crew eating a cape buffalo that was caught in a mud pond, they’ll neve let food go to waste!

And I respect your thoughts, my experiences with them are they have a wonderful family system, care deeply for their pups, and usually act as clean up after some other predator makes a kill.

A great collection Bob, granted the pups can be quite cute and comical @ times, nicely seen. And agree they are an integral part of the predator/food chain.

On the flip side however, I've seen the nasty side of Hyena many times and are responsible for more Cheetah cub deaths than any other predator. @ times swiftly wiping out whole families, recently an inexperienced mother lost all of her 6 eight week old cubs inside 2 days.
Their habit of following and then stealing from hunting Cheetah can be quite heart breaking to watch as they battle to feed their young ones. We have just 6700 wild Cheetah left in the world.

Thanks Marc, I agree it is heartbreaking when they kill cheetah cubs and/or steal their prey! I absolutely wish cheetahs the best, it will be a sad day if they become extinct which certainly could happen, and I have given public talks on how many of the species are in danger. That said, hyenas don’t know cheetahs are threatened and are doing what generations have done before them.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I don't think I want one for a pet, but I'm glad to see a happy family of them doing their job as clean up crew for the plains over there. I guess they are kinda land vultures from the way you describe it. When I looked them up just now, I was surprised to read that they are not dogs at all, and if anything more related to cats, or mongoose. Who knew?

You caught some nice moments there.

Bob - These are creepy and cute at the same time. Really enjoyed viewing them. In the first image what is the animal next to Hyena? It looks small and it appears the Hyena is OK sharing the kill with it.

Great description Greg! That is a jackal, he was sharing food with the hyena which isn’t that common.
