p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Jazz Greats at Jacksonville

Congratulations to story_teller for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 4 votes - View Previous Winners

Had the privilege of seeing two of my personal bucket list jazz musicians at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival over the Memorial Day weekend. If you follow jazz, you know them. If not, they are both top notch multiple Grammy winners. I'm providing B&W images because, as usual, the stage lighting was designed by someone with acute color impairment.

First is Larry Carlton. Larry has been a session musician and is on albums from Steeley Dan to Barbara Streisand. He's a 4-time Grammy winner and the guitar solo on the Grammy-winning Hill Street Blues theme.

The second image is 6-time Grammy winner David Sanborn. David was affected with Polio as a kid and the doctor recommended he take up saxophone to strengthen his lungs and breathing. It was hard photographing David. At nearly 78 years old he has to sit for the performance and had a couple music stands in front that blocked most of him from the audience. He's still got the "chops" and his performance was everything I wished for!

Both images were taken with a Nikon Z6 and 24-120mm f/4 Z.

Larry,
I am VERY familiar with these musicians for longer than I can remember! I grew up with them and still do.

For a very long time we had the "Capitol Jazz Fest" here in Maryland and Wolf Trap Farm in Va.. 3 days of all the top bands /musicians in jazz.

With your permission I will post a few from my film daze. Rick Braun, Brian Culbertson and others....Just a few.

Yours are FAR better than mine! I was in my infancy back then.
Great images Larry!

That is a project I would love to follow through on. But life is in the way at this moment!

No problem Dan. I got a chance to photograph Nick Corlionne and Bobby Caldwell before they passed on. Rick and Bryan are on my to do list as well. I did get a chance to share a beer with Peter While a couple years back. That was awesome! Great guy!

I've got a decent start, but still a long way to go. I was a musician in my younger days (played sax and keyboard) and helped pay my way through college with gigs on the weekend.

Thanks Larry!
I met Peter White many years ago at Wolf Trap Park during a Jazz Fest. Candy Dulfer and her band "Funky Stuff" there also. If you ever get to see her and her band DO IT!!!!! The brass section is "dressed to the hilts" Different colored suits as in James Brown, had their own choreography(Motown style) and the rhythm section also. All the bands I saw over many years were "tight". The Rippington's especially!

Brian Culbertson also. He is a multi instrumentalist. His main instrument ,of course, is the piano but he is a fantastic trombonest and trumpeter.

Fun times!
Dan

Thanks suzy! I had to take it off for the fan's photo. The stage lighting was hot as hell and the intensity of CHIC and fun made me sweat profusely!
What you can't see is the hand towel in my right hand.
Dan and thanks!

Dig the captures.

Sanborn's music was instrumental (earnest, but pun) in helping through a rough patch many years ago.

Speaking of Candy Dulfer, we saw her, Eric Darius and Dave Koz last night in Clearwater, FL. They put on an outstanding, high energy show, but I couldn't get credentials and they wouldn't allow anything other than cell phones. Too bad, but there are other venues! I like your images! Thanks for posting!

That had to be fun show Larry!
Getting credentials is THEE hardest part or if you "know somebody". Luckiliy I had both. But it was a pain in the "patutee" to get a media credential.
Glad you got to see a good show.!
Dan

PS I have "tons" of film images at various Jazz, Blues, Country festivals for daze gone by. I should resurrect them.
Thanks!
Dan
