p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Older Lens adapting to mirrorless body

Sorry if this has been covered a lot but here goes ... Been a long time since I got current with gear.

I have been shooting my 1DX2 and the 2nd version of the 300 2.8 along with 1.4 and 2X teleconverters for several years now and quite happily... but

The thing I have noticed in recent times from some of you brilliant photographers is capturing difficult shots of birds in flight such as flying at you ... Thats pretty much impossible for me (perhaps my gear could do it but not with me at the controls) The new cameras seem wizardly in focus assist (but I imagine the new RF lenses play a key role) Low light conditions are the norm as well and much of the year in clouds I am lucky to get below ISO 3200

So the question is ... Do many people use the older lens versions with the mirrorless converters? As I understand they basically lengthen the distance from the internal focus point in the camera to the rear lens glass , mount to your older EF lens and still give you all the controls

EF to RF EOS lens mount with control ring.

I would like to buy a mirrorless body such as an R 5 ... If I save up this is a possible thing to do but only if I can successfully use my 300 2.8 + extenders. The new 100-300 2.8 looks fantastic but nope

Thank you for any help or suggestions

Your lens will work great with one possible exception: frame rate. Some older lenses don't reach the camera's full frame rate in mechanical shutter. I don't know if your lens is one of them, but you can find the list online or in the PDF manual for the camera. Other than that possible issue, adapted lenses work as well or better on a camera like the R5 than on your 1Dx2.

There have been lots of postings on this and the consensus seems to be the EF lenses focus as well and or better on mirrorless bodies.

Wow that was fast ... Thank you both so much! You literally made my day!!!!!

I thought I was a tad crazy when I bought the 1DX2 but it has been a rock solid camera and I have shot it pretty much daily since it arrived and I got one on a preorder before there were many around.

I was reading that people are guessing a new version of the R 5 is due so maybe buying a used one will move me along

Thank you again .... this is exciting news. (Canon gear has been good for me)

Cheers and all the best

300 2.8 II should shoot 12 mechanical on both R5 and R6:

I dont imagine it would have any issues on the newer bodies. So no worries with that lens.

As an FYI - now is the time to buy adapters if you are in the US. The basic and control-ring adapters are reportedly jumping by $50USD next month.

This price increase already happened in Canada, I paid $179 a couple weeks ago for the basic one when I got my R7.

I've been an R5 user for almost 3 years now, still using my EF lenses. I don't see any point in switching to RF, as my EF lenses are still working perfectly.

I have bought quite a lot of gear from Camera Canada in London .... $179. looks like a bargain, now $259.00 cdn

Mind you this will be the least expensive piece to get back into the camera game. My next research will be deciding which camera body would be best for what I do.
I'm sure the jump to mirrorless will be a stretch for my vintage brain! I still love my 1DX2 , but at times it just doesn't do what I ask!! )

Thank you and stay focused

Thank you ... Such great news .... I am so far out of touch with camera gear ... 6 year old cameras are now vintage.

Have a great day

$179 is the new price for the basic adapter, it used to be $129CAD

$259 is the Control Ring Adapter.

We got the price increases before the US did.

It must be a testament to the popularity of adapted lenses! I just ordered one myself with the intention of picking up more EF glass.

Yes, but also it is caused by the lack of suitable RF replacements for many EF lenses.

I still am using all Canon DSLRs with EF lenses up to 500(600mm)mm. I do really notice the difference in the mirrorless models involving BIF, action to be increasingly sharp at any Tv/Av.

Leave all the "extras" out..gimbals, and such, end result the issue. I have all that and use it. Or should I say "used" it!
Am I going to sell all and move to all Canon mirrorless soon? No..but the "writing is on the wall". That means B&S issues for me. I have mucho gear!

I also realize the adapter fact. That is included in my "thought plan"

No afront to any new models of mirriorless bodies. I really haven't seen a "bad" image from any maker or model that isnt an fine image in raw... and I am factoring in "outside factors" such as photographer, edits....

I will await an opportunity to throw me over the "fence" to mirrorless. I am enjoying it!

I am happy enough with the images my present Canon bodies give me...so.....

For you that are "pros" Disregard my "philosophy". You know already!

Dan
