The ring mount collar for my 100-500 is failing and the lens wiggles around even when tight.
For some weird reason I don't see it for sale separately. Is there anywhere to get a new one? I'm not interested in a third party tripod collar because it needs to rotate smoothly from vertical to horizontal. Thanks.

Canon wants $198 for it. It's ridiculous that the ring mount clamping system is so poorly designed. Even so a few parts could be replaced to repair it.

Try asking about cost for a replacement for 100-400 II. I was quoted over one third the cost of new lens and that was ring only, not the foot, not including labour cost.

Both of my 100-400 IIs have broken lens hoods, but the tripod collars are fine. I did add a bit of Loctite to the tiny screws years ago. I replaced the Canon feet years ago with the low profile Kirk A-S compatible feet.

I'd probably put some kleenex or something in there to make it tight. Which I'm sure is the "wrong" thing to do

That is because you can't buy it at Lowe's.

I wanted to people to know the cost if they are curious. If I had lost or physically damaged the tripod ring mount, I would not be complaining so much. However, it deteriorated under normal use in less than two years (about 5 weeks in the field). The design is rubbish.

I have several of the iSHOOTs (including the RF 100-500 and RF 70-200/4) and the quality is lacking. Even though the RF 100-500 ring mount holds the lens securely enough the rotation is not so smooth when partly loose. My copy of the ring mount for the RF 70-200/4 is worse. It doesn't quite fit right for the various switch cutouts, plus the tightening process literally makes squeaking/grinding sounds and the threads were oily. Despite having an A-S base, both of them need an A-S plate if you want proper balance since the length and position are insufficient.
I give the iSHoots some credit for trying, but it's like they are not actually photographers using the products in the field.

Sounds like iShoot has some quality control issues. My iShoot for the 70-200 f/2.8 is made quite well and fits like the original. Somewhat unsurprising that the more complex shapes of the 100-500 and 70-200/4 have more issues though.

Not the "wrong" thing to do in my mind.

I saw one too many stories about the collar slipping so I cut up an old lens cloth and lined the collar before tightening down. I did this the day I got the lens and have not had any issues, I do not ever remove the collar so I suppose that is also helping

This really is a bad design on Canon's part, oddly my RF 70-200 2.8 has the same basic design but has been solid.

1 layer of electical tape on the barrel should be enough. Decent quality tape will last and ooze less adhesive with heat over time. When tripod mounted, switching from landscape to portrait is usually done with portrait in the same position. So you can make the join (or gap) in the tape where the join in the collar will not be, so less chance of it lifting the tape.
I have done this with EF collars. I had 2 (or 3) EF collars that needed this.

I have the iShoot for the RF 70-200 2.8 and the 100-500 and they are much more useful than the Canon ones because of the built-in dovetail. I have had no issues with either of mine and would happily order them again.

I will add a positive review for the iShoot. Also, I replaced the foot with a Desmond 115 plate (needed a few longer screws from the hardware store), so I get the added benefit of arca swiss mount without stacked plates, and a long handle. It's still not secure if you loosen it enough to rotate while shooting, but when tight, it's very secure, and I trust it to carry by a D-loop threaded in (another benefit of the longer plate is that with the d-loop there's still real estate for sliding onto a tripod or ground pod).
