Presumably these are both rebadged Tamron lenses? (not a bad thing at all BTW).

Someone told me today that Sony 200-600 is actually made by Tamron. If true, then the z 200-600 will be just as good.

Both or just the 70-180 ? It's been a long time since Nikon made a 70-180 .. that was a macro lens.

Tamron doesn't make a 200-600 mm lens (at least under their own brand name). If Tamron does make the Sony G 200-600 for Sony, how likely is it that Sony or Sony and Tamron would license it to Nikon? Not very likely at all, as this is one of the key lenses in the Sony system.

I've been giving it a LOT of thought after using my Z100-400S lens a lot. I mated it with a 1.4x teleconverter with superb results. I have a 2.0x coming tomorrow. Yeah yeah I know, it will be at f11. But I only shoot in daylight typically and am not planning on using that combo for flying birds. Just getting them closer when perched. If the 200-600 being announced ends up a f5.6-f6.3 I might consider it. But if it's a smaller aperture then that I'd pass. Having a 800mm-1200mm reach with the 2.0x on my current lens may indeed be all I personally need. Also there is the size and weight to consider as well. We shall see. But all I'm saying is the teleconverters so far have impressed me with their results and I might well not need more. Let's see what Nikon brings to the table.

If it's much bigger and heavier than the 400 4.5 I will likely pass. I have no complaints about using the 400 with TC's , or just switching to DX mode for added perceived reach.

Wow, finally - hope that is true. That would likely mean mid-late July availability.

I'm first on the preorder list at my LCS for the 180-600/200-600.

The 70-180 is obviously a Tamron design (probably the existing one), and will probably be very affordable. It's actually quite a good lens already, and for anyone who only needs a ~70-200/2.8 style lens occasionally or not as a workhorse, it's a fantastic option to have.

I doubt the Nikon 200-600 is a Tamron design, especially since there is no Tamron equivalent. Nikon's 200-500 was their own design as well. It also just seems like it would be a very odd lens to 'farm out' the design for. At the end of the day though, if it performs well, I couldn't care less whose design it is. The silhouettes have it within ~0.2 inches of the Sony 200-600 (length) and I'd expect weight to be similar as well.

I sold my Sony 200-600 a few weeks ago and was feeling seller's remorse.
Hopefully it'll be fixed by a z 200-600

There's discussion on other forums about whether Tamron makes the Sony 200-600 or not.
Guess it's just a rumor and possibly wrong?

NR also says it could be a 180-600 .. if so, it's likely a new Nikon-designed/built lens.

It will likely be close to double the weight and 1.5x the length.

Most of the current production of Sony 200-600 is from Vietnam, rumored to be from a Tamron factory. However, the earlier production is from China in Sony's own factory. Sony is moving a lot of production out of China. And with internal zoom which is a first, this lens is designed by Sony.

Nikon's F mount 200-500 is very similar to Tamron's 150-600. Focal range can be artificially limited. It's very possible that lens is a license/derivation from Tamron's version. Now Tamron's designs are usually quite good, so this is just an academic exercise in trying to find out the design house.

This new Z mount lens, from the picture, it's difficult to say which is the focus ring and whether it's internal zoom. Since Nikon doesn't want to put an S badge on it, and if it has internal zoom, then it's possibly also designed by Tamron. Otherwise, I can't see Nikon not putting S badge on a lens of its own design with this caliber.

Yeah that's what I figured , or could be similar to the Fuji 150-600 , about a lb lighter than the Sony .

For the price, I feel the only way Nikon will be able to make a better lens than the Sony 200-600 is to move the weight rearwards. That is one of only two things I did not like about the Sony lens - the weight is all at the front, which makes it feel heavier than it actually is, especially on an ungripped A1. The other is that AF takes a big hit when 1.4x is added. Apart from those issues, it represents remarkably good value in the long tele-zoom market and, apart from VR, I feel Nikon will struggle to better it in this price range. If they can match it, they would have done well IMHO.

Just about every long Nikon lens is better balanced than the Sony equivalent, doing so on the 180-600 would be a huge boon.

This will be another very competitive lens.

I believe it will come in a little lighter in weight than the Sony (which weighs 4.6 lbs). Sony's 4.6 weight is quite an achievement in itself.

It will be internal zoom with a short throw. RIP 200-500

I do *not* believe it will be a Tamron. I will be shocked if it is. It will be designed by Nikon. Its glass will be made by Nikon. It will be assembled in China to cut. cost and will retail for about $2K

Oh... and it will be Very sharp!

If the 200-600 is indeed to be manufactured by Tamron, IF it is as well built and sharp as Tamron's E mount 35-150 f2/2.8 then it will be a smash hit for build and sharpness. We shall see

This is an interesting lens to speculate. I’d bet against a Z 200-600 or 180-600 being a rebadged Tamron. Nikon will likely have a nice organic design of their own genesis for what could end up being their best selling wildlife lens. The weird thing is why is this not going to be S-Line? What trade offs are they making to keep cost down?
