Does Tamron have a 180-600 with internal zooming? I know they have a 150-600 but not a 180-600. So it can’t be a rebadged lens - unless you’re saying Tamron is making the lens for Nikon.

The fact that it was a 200-600 on the Nikon z lens roadmap for all these years, and suddenly changed to 180-600, plus the fact that z 70-180 is a Tamron rebrand, tells me the 180-600 is likely a Tamron, and hence the $1700 pricing, compared to the z 100-400 S which costs $2500.

Very unlikely the 180-600 is a Tamron, and no, of course Tamron doesn't have a lens of that focal length.

The 70-180 is simply a Nikon rebadge of an old Tamron formula from Sony, just like the 28-75.

The 24-120 was on the roadmap as a 24-105, you know, until it actually came out. This isn't unusual for Nikon to sweeten the pot at the last minute. That they do that means absolutely nothing about the maker of the lens.

Or they switched it up for unknown reasons like the 24-120 which was a 24-105 on the roadmap. That lens is not a tamron. The 180-200 is also likely not a tamron because the tamron rebrands have exact formula matches on the E mount. This lens has no twin on the e mount from tamron or any other manufacturer.

I guess we'll never know the real answer unless someone leaks it from the mothership?

Oh ok. Didn't know that also got slightly changed.

Also, it doesn't really matter if it is made by Tamron. Tamron makes excellent lenses. It looks like this 180-600 is going to be a winner for Nikon.

The Canadian price is $2299 - about $99 less than the current Sony 200-600 price. Then you have to consider the potential purchase of a replacement tripod collar (versus just replacing or removing the foot on the Sony lens). Not a huge deal, but t's a shame that the el-cheapo tripod collar makes the Nikon lens heavier than the Sony - I'm sure if Nikon were building this lens themselves they would have used the same collar and foot as the 400 f4.5 to save weight and cost.

Perhaps someone will make a lighter replacement collar with an integrated Arca-Swiss dovetail.

You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. Maybe this is a Tamron; maybe it’s not. It’s obviously a quality optic. But YOU have no idea who makes the lens. And for the love of everything holy, enough caterwauling about adding a plate that weighs an ounce or two, like we’ve done for decades. If you’re not strong enough to shoot the lens, don’t shoot it.

Don’t forget. You lucky folks in Nikon land also have the 400 f4.5. And at$2k is a steal imho. Nikon is doing what it needs to do and get customers back or stay.
Meanwhile in Sony land many have been begging for a fast light prime. And Sony is sleeping.
As for the 180-600. Maybe Nikon pulled a fast on on Sony?! Tamron would have already given us Sony users that lens. If I listened to SAR? I’d grow a lot older waiting for their rumors to come true. The Fro, love or hate him is right. SAR is 100% correct 30% of the time.

Unless the actual focal length is closer to 150-500mm with some marketing "adjustments" applied, as is frequently the case with zoom lenses... or, they are just building the lens to Nikon's specifications and not basing it on one of their existing products.

If the lens is not being made by Tamron, then it would be Sigma - but that is even less likely as they Sigma do not currently operate a factory in China where they build lenses for Nikon, like Tamron does...

With respect to the 180-600 lens and who makes it. There's no Tamron equivalent for it to be a rebrand (like the 70-180). Whether it's actually manufactured by Nikon or sourced by Nikon from Tamron (as a lens manufactured solely for Nikon) is unknown. In several articles at LensRentals, Roger Cicala stated that many would be surprised if they knew what first party lenses were designed and manufactured by Tamron. Given this, it's likely the 180-600 is made by Nikon, but also possible that Nikon has contracted it from Tamron. It's just as likely Sony's 200-600 or Canon's 100-500 fall into this category as well. Either way, they're first party lenses with equivalent performance and reliability to other first party lenses so it really doesn't matter.

At least I have the mental strength to carry on a rational discussion without resorting to hysterics... something you so very clearly lack.

Perhaps the lens is actually manufactured by Nikon, but this would be the first time since the original Series E lenses back in the early 1980's (many of which were actually very good optics) where Nikon did not use any of their sophisticated optical coatings in a lens desgin.

Man...the 70-180 is kinda calling my name. Never pulled the trigger on the Z mount 70-200, and I've been rocking a F mount 70-200 VRII for a long time now. The size and weight of the new one just sounds amazing. But I wonder how it stacks up optically. I'm sure it doesn't touch the S glass, but what about my current VRII lens? I'm guessing a lot of that weight also has to do with VR, which the new lens doesn't have?

I have long resisted the ~70-200mm range optics because, though I would love to have one in my bag for family events, they have always been too expensive and big in the f/2.8 versions, and not compelling enough in the f/4 variants.

This 70-180mm has me eying my credit card. Must resist.

So the big question is take a chance with fronting my money and hoping it’s good optically, or do I wait for reviews before laying down my hard earned dollars Decisions, decisions.

the 70-180 supports TC's as well , color me interested all of a sudden

"Need to get closer to birds, wildlife and sports? Attach a Z series 2x or 1.4x teleconverter and increase the focal length up to 360mm (540mm equivalent on an APS-C/DX-format camera or a full frame/FX-format camera in DX-crop Mode)."

Check out the e mount tamron version, same lens. Very sharp wide open, not quite the level of the New sony 70-200 but very good. No VR, needs some compromise to reach the size and weight.

Catching up on specs this morning and really shocked at what Nikon was able to pull off here with the 180-600

Focal Range - Nikon wins
MFD - Nikon wins by a lot, 1.3m on Nikon to 2.4m on Sony
Weight - Nikon wins
Zoom throw - Tie, both are 70 degrees
Price - Nikon wins

Sony's only real advantage is the manual on-lens controls like close focus limiter switch, something that is very handy for certain shooting conditions, and VR mode switches. Other than that, Sony is firmly on notice in this space.

Sonys advantage is that their lens has been out for 4 years, so the damage has already been done in regards to market share. I startes getting into wildlife about 3 years ago, and chose sony at that time because of that lens. Now that may not be everybody, but I see that sony lens a lot with other enthusiasts and hobbyists

I replaced my Sony 100-400 lens foot asap. Especially after hearing how some have had the lens foot break. Spending another $110. for a stronger foot was worth it to me. Some have done that with the 200-600 as well. Shame Sony doesn’t have a better lens foot.

Don’t know about Nikons internal zoom lenses but in Sony land we have if memory serves the 70-200 f2.8 GMII and 200-600.
A new 100-400 is rumored. I’m hoping that is internal zooming also. But I’m getting dragged for that on the facebook Sony pages. “Can’t be done”! Etc etc!

molson wrote:
It's hard to believe that Tamron would be the only lens maker in the world that can't build an internally focusing zoom - except maybe Sigma.
