How did you come about that conclusion?

By watching Ricci's video where he compares it to the 600 F4 TC. That said, I may have been a little hasty in my conclusion (it was something I was expecting to see) as it may be more down to the different positioning of the subject in the frame between comparison shots. Nonetheless, it does not look to me to quite reach 600mm but it may go further than the 570mm I originally postulated.

Current Sony shooter here. Intrigued by this lens and z8. I do currently have an rv and 200-600 and am very satisfied. Looking for something new to replace a9. Very interested to see how this lens performs with the 1.4 tele. The Sony lens is amazing with it. If the Nikon version performs as well I will spend the coin an the z8 and 180-600

Any idea what are the maximum magnification at 600?
0.25x mag seems like at the wide end.

In Ricci's video, at min 22:00, he shows the color checker images side by side, of 180-600 at max zoom on left and 400 f/4.5 + 1.4x TC (560 mm) on right. At 23:44, he shows 180-600 at max zoom vs 600mm f/4. Looking at these, I don't see how the 180-600 does not reach 600

Excited for this lens the more I read about it, too bad I have to wait ~2 months until August. Preordered from Nikon directly (We'll see how that goes, maybe it will ship first, maybe it won't). Have been debating 100-400s used for a while but I've been waiting for this lens for several years so why not give it a try. As long as it is similar to the 100-400 +1.4tc i''ll be more than happy with that. F6.3 doesn't bother me, I'm getting more and more comfortable pushing ISO after using Adobe's denoise solution.

Its 150-600

Scrolling down in the link provided there is a short video showing that Tamron lengthening as it is zoomed (not internally zooming).

Someone told me today that Sony 200-600 is actually made by Tamron. If true, then the z 200-600 will be just as good.

From my understanding Sony has a stake in Tamron. And the 200-600 is all Sony. Right now from what I’m seeing is Nikon has 3 Tamron lenses branded under the Nikon name. 17-28, 28-75, and now the 70-180. Don’t know about a 180-600 from Tamron.

I think it's through the FL range, which means at 600mm it's more like 333mm based on the ratio's of the mfd's of 1.3m and 2.4m for 180mm and 600mm.

2.4/1.3 = 1.85

1.85 x 180 = 333

Huge focus breathing is common in telephoto zooms at mfd.

Fro comparison the Sony 200-600G also has mfd of 2.4m at 600mm but only does 0.2x, so must have even worse focus breathing.

The fact that it was a 200-600 on the Nikon z lens roadmap for all these years, and suddenly changed to 180-600, plus the fact that z 70-180 is a Tamron rebrand, tells me the 180-600 is likely a Tamron, and hence the $1700 pricing, compared to the z 100-400 S which costs $2500.

Agreed.

I came to the same conclusion, based on three things I noticed right away - no Nikon lens coatings, no Syncro VR, and the cheapo tripod collar. Still, the price is nice...

Except it's internal focusing , and the Nikon 200-500 is a thing. This is the replacement .

I don't think this is a Tamron lens , but who knows .. who cares really, Let's see how it performs in the real world.

It's hard to believe that Tamron would be the only lens maker in the world that can't build an internally focusing zoom - except maybe Sigma.

You would think by now all zooms would be internal focusing

The Canadian price is $2299 - about $99 less than the current Sony 200-600 price. Then you have to consider the potential purchase of a replacement tripod collar (versus just replacing or removing the foot on the Sony lens). Not a huge deal, but t's a shame that the el-cheapo tripod collar makes the Nikon lens heavier than the Sony - I'm sure if Nikon were building this lens themselves they would have used the same collar and foot as the 400 f4.5 to save weight and cost.

Perhaps someone will make a lighter replacement collar with an integrated Arca-Swiss dovetail.

Or just use a generic Arca plate that costs $30

I used my Sony 200-600, mostly handheld.
I did have the replacement Arca foot which was quite convenient. Non-removable foot, while inconvenient, will not be a deal killer by any means, especially for the price and focal length range.

I currently use a Nikon 200-400 f4 lens on my Z8/Z9 with the FTZ adapter, sometimes using the 1.4 tele to get some additional reach. It's a heavy rig to carry around, I'm unable to hand hold. This new Z lens sounds very interesting, I have a little concern with the f 6.3 - should I?

That just adds even more weight, though.

With the removable-foot design of the other Nikon (and Sony) zooms, you can remove the foot entirely and attach a generic A-S plate to the 3/8" threaded socket underneath on the bottom of the tripod ring to same even more weight and save a bit of space in your camera bag while remaining tripod-ready- or just go with the nifty replacement feet available from RRS, Kirk, or Leofoto.

Someone will make a replacement Arca compatible collar soon. Don't you worry. 🙂

f/5.6-6.3 is not going to isolate subjects as much as a 600 f/4 or 800 f/6.3 will,
but if you carefully position yourself, to get maximum subject-to-background separation
by lying face down on the ground, or when the bird is flying and the nearest trees are far behind,
you can get good subject isolation

These are a few images I've taken with the Sony 200-600, handheld or placed on the ground (beach) or on the car door.
I'm sure the Nikon 180-600 will match the quality.

600mm at f/6.3

456mm at f/6.3

600mm at f/6.3

600mm at f/6.3

600mm at f/6.3
