So the real one looks quite different from the picture on the first post. Never mind, looks like there is a disclaimer about the rendering.

It was a rendering

Thoughts on the 70-180 2.8? The z 70-200 2.8 is too costly. Is this a good alternative or would the F versions be better with the FTZ?

Impossible to answer as the lens is not yet available for the regular mortals.

Tamron 70-180 rebranded as Nikon
Highly doubt if it'll be as good as the z 70-200 S
Probably be the same or better than F mount with FTZ

Dad gummit I swore I wasn't going to be interested in the 180-600. But these previews have lit my fire and I'm screwed. I have to plan on being broke for the next year Wonder when it will actually be available. Needless to say I probably couldn't get my hands on one for 4-6 months with all the possible backorders.

If that 70-180 ends up anything like Tamron's 35-150 f2/2.8 you better believe it will be a KILLER lens sharp as a tack with amazing bokeh. Tamron is nothing like what they used to be. Their E mount stuff run right up against the best GM Sony lenses. So I have no doubt they will be wonderful

What strikes me above all across all these initial reviews is how beautiful the bokeh is.

Truly outstanding in general and unreal for such a zoom lens.

If the Z 70-180/2.8 is as good as my AF-S 70-200/4 VR, I'll buy it.

Tamron does make a 200-600 G2 dslr design. Could be a tweak of that.

70-180 is slightly different from Tamron version specs wise? This one takes TCs…

Great video from Ricci. Honestly it now makes the 100-400 S look poor value and it was optically superior to the bare 100-400 let alone the latter with the 1.4x.

Great addition to the Nikon Z system!
Nikon took great care to at least copy all of the Sony wildlife options, so with a portable wildlife body option in the Z8 and this new Z180-600, there's now literally nothing that Sony has over Nikon. Rather, it's the other way round.

The times that Sony had Nikon scrambling to catch on are now over, and Sony will no longer have the luxury of system switchers moving over to them in droves. For mirrorless shooters this is a good thing, having all the options and choices available.

I assume that this 180-600 will perform indentically to the Sony 200-600G, although the VR will for sure be better as Sony trails here. It's not a lens I would buy, I prefer prime lenses, but I am glad it has been released, because now the Nikon lens designers have their hands free to make the Z600mm f5.6PF

I don't think much is to be expected from Sony (actually: nothing) with regards to a middle ground GM 600mm f5.6 prime, but Nikon could do it. Just take the fantastic 500PF, make it Z and add 100mm....

Could you point to a link describing that 200-600 Tamron? I can't seem to find it with google.

The Sony 200-600 has 24 elements in 17 groups and zooms internally. Five ED and one aspherical element.

Tamron 150-600 G2 is 21 elements in 13 groups and zooms externally. Three LD elements.

Nikon 200-500 has 19 elements in 12 groups and zooms externally.

The AI-S Nikon (manual focus) 180-600 mm f/8 has 18 elements in 11 groups. Not sure about the internal/external zooming.

The new Nikon 180-600/5.6-6.3 has 25 elements in 17 groups and zooms internally. Six ED elements and one aspherical element.

It seems like they are all different optics since the numbers of elements do not match. The Sony 200-600 seems closer to the Nikon 180-600/5.6-6.3 in the number of elements than the others, however, the groupings of the elements in the cross sections are completely different.

Tamron and Nikon have worked together in the past and they have some joined patents for long zooms for DSLRs. Whoever makes these lenses, they are all very different in design.

From Ricci's video it is clear that the 180-600 is actually about 570mm at the long end. This is true too of Sony's 200-600. Otherwise, it looks to be a very compelling offering. I like that they have balanced the weight nicely and that by removing the collar, weight can be reduced below 2kg.
